I'm trying to locate Turner Keith, the angler who caught the state record spotted bass from Lake O' the Pines in 1966. Anyone know him, family or friends? Drop me an e-mail, mattwillwrite4u@yahoo.com

I thought it was the 80's? Rayburn had the record for a while in the 80's. 5+ but I saw pics of a 6+ never turned in.

The current Texas state record spot is a 5.98 out of Alan Henry, caught in Jan. 2016. Genetic testing showed that fish to be an Alabama bass. The American Fisheries Society declared the Alabama bass a separate species several years ago -- they are no longer considered "spots." As of Sept. 1, 2017, the AH fish will be moved to a new state record category for Alabama bass and the former state record from 'Pines will be reinstated as the state record spot. The 'Pines fish is likely hanging on somebody's wall somewhere. If it is, it would be cool to get a scale from the skin mount to have it genetically tested to see if it indeed was a true spot. It's a long shot, but that's what I'm looking for.

MOST spots in Texas are Kentucky spotted bass. The ones in AH were stocked from Alabama bass, because they (TPWD) felt that they adjusted well to vertical cover better than the Kentucky spots. The Alabama spots grow a little larger and faster, but still a different species of spots. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
