Did the same thing 2 weekends ago and no issues. Get a big hammer drill and knock it out. That reminds me I need to hang that SOB still.

Stop before you get to the interior wall
Use the correct type and size of anchors.
I drilled into the fireplace brick to place anchors to hang my Texas flag project (which weighs about 30 lbs)
Still hanging good and looking good.

Drill the brick not the mortar. Mortar is just a sand mix and not structural enough to hang anything from. If you are drilling for something that you'll have to match the holes to make sure you punch a starter indent in the brick as your bit will want to walk on you till you get started.
