Hello Fellas,

My family and I are making our first trip down to Port A over July 4th and will be hauling our boat (Ranger Bay). My kids who are 3 and 5 are looking to get into a lil action down there. They have grown up chasing crappie and are excited to see what they can catch in the salt.

We are staying in the Pirates Bay area but honestly have no idea where to start when it comes to fishing down there.

Any pointers on methods, areas, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

JS

I can't help you with the boat fishing areas as I use a kayak. I can tell you about the shore fishing available. The Port Aransas jetty is just east of downtown PA. You can park there without a beach permit. It would be a good place for you but I wouldn't take the young ones to fish on the jetty. There is a boat ramp at the marina on the island that you can launch from and fish the inlets to brown and root flats and the east side of Corpus Christi bay. There is Bob Hall pier which may be a good place to take them. It is on Padre Island proper at beach access 6 I believe. You can get some shrimp fishbites and fish the passes (there are several between Port Aransas and Padre Island. The kids can catch some rat reds back in those areas from the bank. The state park has some access to the marshes but I have never been back there. You can fish off of the beach in the first and second guts for pompano, specks, ladyfish, croaker and sand trout. Look for clear green water. Most of the beach is taken up by swimmers starting in Port Aransas and going south. The area opens up down by beach access 2.

You can get bait in Port Aransas is Woody's. There are others that are probably as good but I have always used Woody's. There is bait on the Corpus side at the bait barn. There are also two bay piers on the JFK Causeway at which the kids could catch some Specks.

PM me when you get a chance and I will give you some more info. I have an interest in a place in Royal Sands and try to get down there about 4 times a year.

If you want good seafood go to FINS. It is a tourist place but the fish is still good. When we come off of a deep drop trio we usually have some of our fish cooked there.

I fish on a 14 ft piece of plastic.

Port A outfitters will have live and fresh dead bait. All of the areas mentioned are a good for action but the jetties will be tough for kids, they will hang up on the rocks. Honestly I would not mess with taking your boat, it will be a zoo down there and your kiddos are really young and bay fishing is going to be tough with all the traffic. If you do take your boat get some live shrimp and head down the Channel towards the lighthouse. Fish the bank north of it. Rig a popping cork (just google for the setup) and you should catch some fish. The kids can also fish right behind Woody's and catch piggy perch. A crappie float setup will work fine just use a small hook. Another place to go is behind Fishermans Warf at night. They should catch some piggies and a ribbon fish or two. Keep the ribbon fish for bait. Best bait for action is a piece of freshdead peeled shrimp. Have fun!!

Thank you men for your help. I assure you I won't be taking the boat out if theres a ton of traffic but I would hate to not have it in the event that traffic died down after the 4th.

I have been reading about what is basically a slip cork rig for fishing the jetties? Have either of you had much luck with this type of rig for preventing hang ups?

Thanks again for your help!

I hate to be such a Debbie downer but the Deep Sea Round Up Iis the 6-9th with 800 participants including me. You can also go across the channel from the lighthouse to saint Joes Island and beach the boat and enjoy the beach and fish. Use a cast net and catch some small mullet and use a barrel swivel/leader hook/ and an egg weight and fish the drop off for specks and skip jacks aka lady fish they are fun to catch and fight like a little tarpon. Not good to eat but reds will eat cut skips in the surf. Sorry I just don't mess with the jetty much.

No problem KQT, I appreciate your help. Good luck on the tournament. What do you think this Tropical Storm will do to the bite?

Look for the Corpus Christi fishing report on YouTube, they have weekly reports. Also take a look at corpusfishing.com for a ton of information.

Slab it should not effect it two weeks out. I will tell you a storm or hurricane in the gulf will either make fishing great or mess it up for weeks, it all depends on what it does to the blue water. I'm an old guy and after hurricane Gilbert which was massive and hit Mexico we enjoyed incredible fishing off shore. That storm even pushed red snapper into the ship channel, we caught snapper off the station street pier. Which is another place to try , its good for gafftop catfish. Go to google earth and check out the places mentioned

One other thing; rinse your rods and reels really good, for reels low pressure. And run freshwater thru your motor for 10 minutes. There is a car/boat rinse off the cutoff road which is the road in front of you as you leave the boat ramp. If you have trailer breaks don't forget to rinse your trailer really good, they will freeze up.

Yes sir thank you. I recently had a brake issue on my trailer so I replaced all components with stainless rotors and calipers but am still planning on keeping them rinsed off. I also picked up some CRC Salt Terminator that I plan to use to flush out my motor with. I will take all precautions when dealing with the salt.

99% of the time we are on Ray Roberts for crappie so this will be a new experience for us. What about your livewells? You just wait till you get home and dunk it in some fresh water to rinse out the pumps and lines?

Another dumb questions as I can't be for sure what I'm finding on google.....when you mention the lighthouse are you referring to the Aransas Pass Lynda Ann?

That is a great question, I just rinsed mine out real good. Honestly I've never seen anyone worried about it. I guess water going down and washing the intake was enough. I never had an issue with mine or the raw water wash.

Yes, the lighthouse is on the Lydia Ann channel. That's a good place to take the kids. Watch out for the ferries and barges in the main channel. If you decide to fish from the bank fish early before it heats up. Take bug spray. If you use the boat I would I invest in a map. It is easy to get confused in some of those areas. Mind the channel markers as it can get shallow quick. Oyster shell is not kind to boat bottoms and lower units. Let us know how it goes. My prediction, once you see those shallow marshes and bait busting everywhere you will want a kayak, but I'm biased. Have a good time.

Make everyone wear water shoes those oyster shells will slice a foot open and with the bacteria on them you are guaranteed a nasty infection
