Hello Fellas,

My family and I are making our first trip down to Port A over July 4th and will be hauling our boat (Ranger Bay). My kids who are 3 and 5 are looking to get into a lil action down there. They have grown up chasing crappie and are excited to see what they can catch in the salt.

We are staying in the Pirates Bay area but honestly have no idea where to start when it comes to fishing down there.

Any pointers on methods, areas, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

JS

I don't have any pointers, we've only fished the beach at PINS. But I have a 4 and 6 year old and we just got a boat, so I'm looking forward to hearing a report from your trip. Best of luck to ya'll while having good times with the family!

Hey Mickeytfc,

Check the "inshore saltwater forum" as I've been getting a lot of help there!

Thanks,

Fish the edges of the grass flats where the grass ends and goes to deeper water, and also potholes (sandy depressions) in the grass near there. Look for bait fish on the surface in those areas and then fish the structure that is happening on. You can use whater for bait.. I'd suggest using live shrimp if you can get them since the boys are young.

Men,

Do any of you recommend a guide for the Port Aransas area? I called a few and even talked to Tails Up Guide Service about setting up a "teaching trip" for our first day down there to better understand the area.

Basically, I just want to get comfortable with where I can run and some likely areas to fish. James seemed really cool but had to check his schedule tonight before committing so I'd like to research more options. He also said he would ride in my boat which is a plus as i'll have the trail on my graph to follow which will relieve some stress of hitting underwater obstacles.

Thank you to Heath for showing me the ropes! He took me out on my boat and showed me a few spots to take the kids. We went out today and ended up with 4 reds, a puffer fish, and tons of gaft tops. Kids had a blast. Thanks again for your help Heath!
