Got back from a crappie trip on an area lake and had this happen to me. What would you have done?
Came upon an orange marker with no boat in site. It was marking a really good looking pile, and I assumed that it was probably hung up in it. We started fishing it. The first 10 minutes we had boated 15 good ones. It slowed for about 5 minutes, then we got another 12. About the 11th fish, a boat comes hauling a$$ up to us and DEMANDED we " get off their spot ". That their marker was on it and it was THEIRS to fish. I asked him what the pile consisted of, (since it had produced so good), and he responded, " I don't know, I didn't put it there ". So then I asked him why he claimed it was "his spot to fish" He responds with "I was there first, I had to go get some more minnows". By this time there was about 1ft between our boats and when I asked him to not bump the boat, give me a little space, he started cursing and yelling stuff at me and started going in circles around us. Should I have moved? Well when my buddy caught that 12th, we told them that we had finished our limit on "his pile" and appreciated him marking it for us, otherwise we wouldn't have probably found it. At no time did I or my buddy raise our voices, or curse back at him. We went on and ended up with 41 in the box, which we kept 20 and gave the rest to some bank fisher ladies.

The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?

If You did what you thought was right in your heart You don`t need anyone`s approval unless you want pats on the back.

I would've fished the hell out of it, got his boat numbers and took a video of him and sent it to the GW. You could've picked up the bouy too.

hmmm Here's what I would probably do:
1. Mark the spot on your plotter/phone, etc.
2. Catch crappie
3. Leave the marker alone.
4. When the other guy showed up and started his ti-raid - say thanks, leave the spot and then call the GW and report his hull number.
5. Make plans to fish that spot again.
6. Enjoy life.

To really show the jack wagon, you need to post the GPS coordinates here so we can all fish his spot!!!

I'm glad it didn't end in a fight boxing because if it would have been me, that is probably how it would have ended if he was acting like that. Of course, I've been looking for an excuse to beat the ever living carp out of someone for awhile now.

You actually handled the situation very well in spite of how bad an ASSHAT that this guy was being!!!! Kudos to you.

Put the coordinates on here and let's go completely surround it one day!

I would have let him have the spot. You had already caught 26 nice crappie from "his spot". The additional fish you caught wasn't worth what you went through listening to him.

Since I have returned to the DFW area I have discovered there are a lot of ignorant fools fishing in this area now. And you can't win a disagreement with an ignorant fool. All you can do is make yourself look like another ignorant fool if you try to reason with them about your right to fish there.

If I felt mischievous I might tell him, you're right, this is a great spot. I would then show him all the fish I had in my live well, telling him they all came from that location, whether they did or not. I would then say I got to tell all my friends about this spot. Then I would smile, say have a nice day, and leave it to him.

If I wasn't feeling mischievous I would just tell him to have a nice day and leave. I can always fish other spots and return there later or on another day.

If the guy would have been civil, I would have left it for him. But his attitude made me stay. My buddy wanted to drop the anchor in it and mess it up, but that's no way to be. I've built a few piles, and if I see someone on one that I've built and set, I may go over to them and ask how it's producing, talk with them for a little bit, maybe exchange a beverage or story. It's always good to know that the hard work you put in a pile, to make and sink it, that it's a producer. Some times they will let you fish it with them, but I usually won't. I do feel I was the better person, and if your on "My Lake" (pun intended), and see a baby blue 17ft whaler, stop by, if I'm catchin fish, your more and welcome to catch some with me. (lake is east from hometown)

There is currently a good thread on this very subject over in the bass section. Man was arrested on Toledo Bend for harassing people fishing.

As someone mentioned you can't argue with an ignorant fool. After 31 years in education in dealing with kids and their parents I have a motto of "Don't try to reason with stupid, stupid wins every time". Some people think they own the lake, if I'm catching fish come join me. I'm out there to fish and relax and that's what I do. My wife and I were on Cleburne this week. We were on a good brushpile. Just beat another boat by literally seconds. When I threw my buoy marker out the guy said " you just marked the spot I was going to". It was a gentleman with his two grandsons. I told him to come join us. He did and watching his two grandsons catch crappie was worth sharing the pile. My wife and I caught over 30 and I'm sure they caught at least 20. But, not everyone has my philosophy. To each his own.

You handled it pretty classy in my opinion.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right
