In my experience, most of the time that a store has a discontinued product, they will want to liquidate that product so there's shelf space for current items.

Academy has a discontinued kayak which I'm interested in - it's got enough capacity to carry my lardbutt, and was marked down to $399 at Christmas (regular price $599). I've called the corporate number & been told that it's only available in the stores with remaining inventory, and that the store managers have the discretion to mark down discontinued products.

I've gone to four different locations around me that still have this kayak in stock, and cannot get a single manager willing to come down at all on price.

So much for my negotiation class this past semester ... apparently not everything is negotiable.

No but when you get one let me know. I know some places nearby I can show you to get started on.

I am laughing because I am the same way. There is no cheaper customer base than kayak fisherman. I got lucky and after a failed attempt at buying a kayak on Craigslist (the seller finally texted me and told me to quit pestering him) I found the same kayak had just gone on sale at Academy for the same price I was trying to negotiate for a used one.

Did you talk to the store manager while the store was slow and there were no lines at the cash register? It also helps to let them know what other gear you will be buying to outfit the kayak.

It's a discontinued product. Most retailers (in my experience) will mark down discontinued products to get them off the shelf. They want that valuable real estate (display space) for current in-stock inventory so they can increase their sales volume on those current items.

If you're willing to sell product 'X' at $399 in month 1, then you should still be willing to sell it at (or near) that same price in month 4, assuming that your cost is still the same. When Academy does a sale for $399 in one month, that's a price signal saying "here's what this kayak is really worth", so it's harder for me to justify spending the extra $200 on it at $599.

Yeah, I'm cheap, and I try to negotiate for most things.

Because the manager undoubtedly has a sales target to hit for the month and getting $350 for the yak is better than getting $0 and hoping someone comes along next month to buy it. Two suggestions: first, wait until at or near the end of a month (works for car purchases too), and second, maybe pay full asking price but ask them to throw in something of value to you, such as a better quality seat or a decent paddle.

My buddy bought that kayak last year and likes it. It has a lot of nice features for the price, with good length and reasonable weight.

My friend did. Got a deal like your talking about on an old inventory kayak. Might of helped that he had his good looking daughter with him and the manager was mesmerized.

I walked in saw it by itself on the back row and had a clearance sticker for $99 on it. It was a prior year model marked down $399 I thought it was a misprint but the manager said no it was correct. There were 3 others in the state with the same price

Sold it Monday for $300

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst

I got them down from a clearance price once. It was a Featherlite 9.5 sit-in. I think they gave me another 20% off the marked down price. Full price was maybe $350, and I paid around $180 for it. It was missing a rodholder, which I noticed and used to my advantage. In the Sherman store...

I asked for a "Senior Discount" and was promptly, but courteously told "No". I spent $600.00 on a kayak, a paddle and PFD, plus sales tax. Five percent off would have not hurt them, and gained them some customer loyalty. I REALLY don't like them, since Toys'R'Us bought them! Look at their 16-page "Sale Flyer". There's about five things that are on sale; the rest is regular everyday price. They were a great store about 40 years ago.

I doubt it happens often in my Academy since they sell quite a few kayaks and they carry several models, so they know exactly what they are worth and how much they can get.
Besides that, if there is a deal to be had someone will jump on it on day one.
They will price match, but you can't beat Academy prices most of the time.

+1. And if they are bested, they'll beat that price by 5%. It's hard to top Academy.
