Last time I was at the lake, I go to turn the motor on and head to the ramp and shifted to reverse to pull away from the shallows and then shifted to neutral and then shifted to forward only to find out the shifter dropped all the way down and did not go into forward, instead it was still in reverse. Everything seems to be hooked up under the cowling. I got it home and hooked up the rabbit ears and ran it in the drive way...The prop won't spin with the motor turned off and only has 1-2inches of play in it but as soon as I crank the motor the prop is spinning in reverse even when in neutral and forward. Could this be a lower unit problem? Maybe a sheared shaft or broken gear? Out of the water I do hear a little clunk every now and then but it is not continuous.

Sounds like the shift cable broke.
