I'm an hr away from each down here for work. Tomorrow I'm getting off at lunch and want to try to get on some fish. I have 6 rods with me and all but 2 are heavy bass rods. 65lb braid, steel leaders, few spoons, and some mirror lures. Any advice for a newbie on which to go to and what to throw. I'm going solo so if anyone wants to tag along they're more than welcome. Thanks in advance.

Matagorda if you have some time. longer drive down the beach, but it give you beach and bay access.

What u mean down the beach? I thought you had to have surf rods for the beach side? As you can tell, I'm new to this

If the surf is flat and green, just wade out to the second bar with that spoon, your tackle is fine, there's plenty of things that'll hit it.

If it's muddy and rough, go on the bay side, look for grass flats/sand you can wade.

There's a reported fish kill in Matagorda, Colorado River area.

The beach side of the old river should be fine (the fish kill is just shad in the old river). I'd lean toward matty beach over freeport.

Hmmm, that's disappointing. I'll be there 6/23-6-26, we're staying in the LCRA RV Park. Was looking forward to trying the old river channel again, didn't do much good there last year. Any tips on rigs/bait/technique for fishing in that current? The only keeper we pulled out of there before was one big flounder on a D.O.A. shrimp bouncing along the bottom. Didn't do much better at the beach with finger mullet or cut bait. No keepers, the only fish I hooked that put up much of a fight was a large ladyfish that got me excited for a short time.

Never been to Free port but have had a little success in Matagorda. Had some luck catching bull reds off the jetties, use small live croaker or your regular cut baits and just wait. Good luck.
