What would everyone consider big for a bluegill? Inches? Weight?

10" gills are a trophy I think. I've caught very few true 10"+ gills.

I agree with the majority that a fish over 10 inches long is a trophy.

A fish over 8 inches is big, and a fish over 6 inches is big enough to eat.

The state record is a 12.5 inch Bluegill weighing 2.02 pounds, caught in 1999 from the Lampasas river.

The world record fish is 15 inches long and weighed 4.75 pounds. It was caught from Lake Ketona, AL. in 1950.

Big bluegills are caught in Lake Fairfield, Bluegill Lakes, Athens, Toledo Bend and many private ponds.

My personal best is a 10.5 inch fish caught from Bluegill Lakes near Canton.

Texas Parks&Wildlife considers any sunfish/Bluegill 10" or more a Big Fish which an angler can get a Big Fish Award. There is a chart on the TPW web site showing the minimum lengths of the different species that they have to be for a Big Fish Award. I personally release all trophy size fish including a lot of nine inch sunfish. For the me the perfect eating size are sunfish 7 to 8 inches in length. There are also plenty of fat six inch fish that can fry up nice also. thumb

Thanks guys. 12-15 years ago my neighbor had a little pond behind my house and I grew up catching these huge bluegill and he built a considerably bigger pond up the hill and drained the smaller one. I spent a full day catching buckets full of bass and bluegills and transported them up to the new one. Years down the road the new pond Flurished and the fish population exploded! You can go out there these days and catch some freaking Monster gills... I spent the majority of my childhood tromping the the pastures pond hopping and seems like all the little farmers ponds had these giant true bluegills and now a days they are harder to find... I'll try and get out there soon and post some pics so you guys can see.

Love fishing those ranch ponds. I have caught some huge sunfish out of some private ponds that I was able to fish last year in central Texas just outside of Waco. Ponds offer up some very good fishing.
