I recently picked up fishing couple months back. I mostly fish creeks and have been successful catching many bass and panfish.

Me and my girlfriend are staying the weekend in the Fulton Area for my 30th birthday and our condo has a private 800 ft pier with lights right on the bay. I feel like saltwater fishing is a whole new ballpark and I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed with what kind of tackle I'll need to be successful pier fishing. Not trying to catch a whale, but I'd like advice to catch anything. I more than likely will hit up a bait shop and use live bait. My gear right now ranges from 6 to 8 foot rods from Light to Medium Heavy action...would love to find a use for them all. We will be fishing early mornings and late at night with the lighted pier.

If anyone has any advice on what proper tackle/setups or anything else I need to know and can steer me in the right way I'd greatly appreciate it.

I think you will get a lot of good replies here.

When I am wanting to just catch anything...http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/texas-tackle-factory-double-shad-18-oz-rig
This will catch small trout coming and going in the late night lights if there are any around. There are small trout in over half the lights you ever visit on a pier. It is necessary to take needle nose pliers or other hook removal device so you can return the fish unharmed to the water. Bait such as live shrimp will produce as well.

If you want to give yourself a better chance at bigger fish the same thing in a the 1/4 ounce works as does bigger bait. Just know the small trout will still hit that stuff and hook up less.

Edit. You can use the 1 3/4 and catch more of the small trout because they can handle it better, but you will also get more deep hooked. Also recommend 2 packages per person fishing

Also using fresh water gear occasionally in salt water is fine, but rinse the rods and reels off well in the shower after each use. If they have a fish cleaning station with freshwater that is even better.

Can someone explain how the Feds count recreational Red Snapper catch?

I've been recommended DOA shrimp too, any objections to using that?

As far as my gear...do I just need like Med-Hvy action rods and like a 15 lb line?

I wanted to maybe toss a rod out with double hooked leader and 1 ounce sinker while I do that...im literally trying to catch anything. Croakers...trout...catfish...sheepshead...whatever...I just don't want to get skunked on my fishing trip. I will be doing straight CATCH and RELEASE on everything.

Double drop leader with size 8 hooks. Full size blue crab. One per hook. 4 oz weight. 65lb test. Have fun catching drum!

Stay with the smaller jigs in doubles and use them on ultra light to light spinning rigs and you'll have a lot of fun. The trout under the lights are usually feeding on very small glass minnows and small shad as well as an occasional small mullet. Concentrate on the edge of the light where the current is pushing the bait and you'll usually catch bigger fish rather than in the middle of the light where the small fish are concentrated.
Any of the usual small crappie size baits will catch fish under the lights.
Tight lines!

X2 on rinsing. I like to freeline shrimp or piggies when using live bait. Might be too late to order and get them on time but the matrix shad in white with a light jig head is an awesome bait for night under lights.

Nice fish Cliff but I doubt they would catch big drum there in June.

I've also bought some cork poppers to throw in the mix.

absolute best pier in the area in my opinion is Fulton Pier!!!! Almost 1/4 mile long and I have fished it with great success for 20 + years. Specs, sand trout, reds, perch, shark and a lot of cats!!!!
