Why?

Many fisherman in North Texas report improved fishing, cleaner water and more vegetation growth.

Danged Cormorants and ducks and cranes are spreading these razor blades everywhere.
Need to outlaw all these water birds from all lakes and rivers.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

I can almost guarantee you the Zeebs will get more attention from the geniuses in the Capital (and the mainstream media), now that they have invaded a nearby lake. What will be really interesting is to see if they run down the Guadalupe River --- imagine what that will do for tourist's tushes dragging across the zebra covered river rocks! Say goodbye to tourism.

I posted this over in the bass section; comments from others in the thread a worth a read...

I've been dealing with 'em awhile. Learnt a thing or three...

Zebra mussels, like fire ants and many other living things, are a double edged sword and extremely invasive. On the one hand they are excellent filter feeders and will clean and clear a water body to nearly sterile condition. OTOH, when it gets too clean and there is nothing left to grow plankton and make food for the food web, the web collapses, especially at the top, that's where the fish we want to catch mostly are. Old Chinese Proverb, "A Water Too Clean Has No Fish!"

The dammed things do just that, make dams where you don't want them, in a manner of speaking. They attach to the inside of water lines and pipes to the point of clogging them up.

Interesting observations noted in the posts above, similar to what I've seen. I believe our saving grace with respect to the zebra mussel is that its just a tad too hot for them to do well here. I've seen them gain footholds again and again along the coast....um, er, heard about...at any rate they get introduced then disappear. Global Warming will save us for sure....

Of all the mussels and freshwater clams we got, only the zebra mussel attaches to stuff in the water column. Like trees, logs, boats, pilings, etc.

All these worries they got 'bout Asian Carps (bigheads and silvers) gettin' into the Great Lakes are unfounded in the context of the zebra mussel invasion. The water in the Great Lakes is far too clear and clean now to support the filter feeding carps or to provide the necessary nutrients for their self propagation.

Invasive species seem to me to follow a pattern. At first they are everywhere when they invade as they find the eco-system friendly. But after a while the eco-system somehow thins them back down again until they fit into a niche. I don't know if this is true of the zebra mussels or not, but it has been true of other species.

One thing is a given, no amount of preventive actions will keep them from spreading. Slow it down some...maybe - but not gonna stop it. So might as well accept it that they will spread, then deal with it as necessary. Especially for boaters who keep their boats in the water and water and power companies that have pipes in the water. The rest of us will probably just have to learn where to step and not step.

As for clearing out the tubers - is that really a bad thing?

There is some treatment for them but EPA tree huggers won't allow it to be used except in some private lakes. Lake Kiowa feeds Ray Roberts but there are no zebras in Kiowa. Ray Roberts is full of them.
Kiowa is a private gated community. Go figure.
BTW---That place is a honey hole for crappie, cats and ditch pickles.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved use of Zequanox in open water bodies last year following its 2012 approval for use in closed industrial piping systems.

Well, the article says Canyon is infested and test found them in various parts of the lake.
Since Canyon is a popular destination for local boaters and there are several other bodies of water within close proximity, you can bet that they are already in those lakes as well.
Kevlar inner tubes?
