Friend from work broke his off and said he couldn't tell much difference before or after. But he has big 36v motor. I'm running a 42# motor on 20' boat. Need all the help I can get.

THIS! For sure. Look closely. If it was bent, the point where the skeg attaches to the barrel of the motor would be directly below the shaft. It's not - the point of attachment has moved! ....the skeg isn't bent. The portion of the motor housing that has the skeg attached has rotated. Those two bolts should be at right angles to the TM shaft. Loosen them carefully, rotate it all back into alignment, and then carefully/equally re-snug those bolts. Don't crank down on them or you may trash the seal that keeps water out.....

The motor housing is a cast aluminum alloy, and it's very brittle. If you wack it with anything, you stand a very good chance of breaking it.

You can tune the trolling motor by moving the s keg around till you find its sweet spot. As said above loosen the two screws ans move tot he best or quietest point.

Thanks for all the input. I tried loosening the 2 bolts a little but it won't budge. Not going to smack it with a hammer. Guess I'll just live with it.

This! And the service dept that worked on it may have set it that way because that was where it made the most torque and least noise.
