Ha! Love it! Take kayak to lake, unload it, carry it to the water's edge, bend over and place hands above the knees and inhale deeply for a minute, then take it back to the truck load it back up . . . and go home.

.2 miles!

Seriously, on the hydration issue, this is a big deal. There is that nasty negative feedback loop where once a person becomes dehydrated, the body is reluctant to absorb water because doing so further dilutes salt and mineral balances in the bloodstream. Something like that . . . and it requires a quick trip to an emergency room for a saline drip to restore things properly. You'll see a pro athlete become dehydrated, disappear to the dressing room with a trainer, come out 15 minutes later looking like a new man.

You don't want to have that happen 5 miles out and away from help, so we have to stay ahead of it.

I should have added that the time of day is a big deal now that we are heading into the brutal heat months of July and August. In the past, what I'd do is hit the lake very early, then get off around 1 PM at the latest. Now that I live on a lake, I think I'll go out early and just get off after 4 or 5 hours. And, even better, I think some of my trips will be from around 6 PM when the sun starts dropping, then fish into dusk.

I'll pass, as often as I can, on being out there on 100 degree days in the middle of the afternoon.
