My trolling motor quit working and I have narrowed it down to the pig tail. When I go to bass pro and Academy , all they have is the two wire which means I would have to swap out the plug in the console. You guys got any ideas where I cold get a 3 wire pig tail ?

Is this a round or flat connector?

Are you sure there are three wires coming off the plug? Most times they will only have two wires.

If the boat side of things is fine, there is no need to replace all of it. The original reason for the 3 pin designs was for 12/24V trolling motors. That one design works for 12V, 24V, or 12/24V, or even 36V so that the manufacturer doesn't have to bother making different models. The OP may have a TM that uses two of the 3 available wiring connections. Regardless, the OP is correct that he needs the same mechanical design no matter how many of the conductors are used - if he prefers to replace only what's broken.

Here is the 3-pin female connector on eBay. Notice this one has the notched mechanical "key" just as the female receptacle on the boat.
eBay female 3-pin TM connector, $13 includes shipping

For the OP: When you say this pigtail is the problem, do you understand exactly what is wrong? There is very little to break in these molded connectors. Could it be that the conductors are broken at the crimped wiring connector instead? If that's the case, you should be able to trim the wiring tag end and recrimp a new butt splice connector.

Thanks for the info guys. I was getting voltage to the console port and no voltage to the motor. The only thing in between was the pig tail. I am just going to replace it .

I'm curious how you determined "no voltage to the motor" - meaning where did you meter that? If inside the head of the TM, then the issue could be anywhere between the console power port and the point you metered, and not necessarily the molded connector. The most common and most likely failure is the butt connector a few inches from the molded 3-pin connector, and not the 3-pin connector itself. That butt splice is $0.20, readily available, and would be replaced when installing a new 3-pin connector anyway. So, why not check out the condition of the butt-splices first? It only takes one of those failing to shut down the motor.

Did you happen to try cleaning the contacts? May be all it needs. I would clean the male contacts even if I just replaced the female. Also, look for any discoloring or brittleness from heat. Might be a sign its time to replace some wiring or connections before it leaves you stranded.

Good point. Those contacts are a bit difficult to get to with emory cloth, but I use a spray that will do some tarnish removal.

There are still multiple plugs available. I know cause I stock most of them. Usually the 3 wire plug (originally made for 12/24 trolling motors) are usually 8ga instead of the 10ga used on two wire plugs. Also, if you look close, the TM side of the three wire is usually female and the TM side of the two wire is usually male. Getting back to the diagnosis. If you have voltage at the boat side, but no voltage on the TM side, it is usually the plug connection itself -- but could be either side and best to change both at the same time. Also, the voltage should be checked with the trolling motor plugged in and set to constant so the system is loaded.
