I got up early this morning and fished below Canyon dam, hoping to catch a few fish before the tube hatch was in full swing. Caught several good-sized redbreasts.

I'm getting the hang of using the fly rod, too, at least the casting part. I still have a long way to go as far as different rigging styles and fly selection based on different hatches and seasons, but I'm having a good time learning.

Great looking Redbreast.

You may already do this, I but look for my fly line to twitch, when it does I do a short strip, you won't feel the take if the fish is swimming at you. The strip won't ruin your drift and you can fish it out if nothing is connected.

Fly rods are a fun way to catch sunnies.

Don't worry about the mule, just load the cart

Thanks Fitz, I'll give that method a try.

Hi Chuck, I didn't make it to the tailrace today, I walked in at Action Angler and fished my way upstream for about a mile. According to the Sattler Gauge the flow was at 161 cfs. Slow enough that whenever a group of tubers floated by I had to stop fishing for a few minutes in order to let them pass. It made wading a whole lot easier, though.

Side Note: It's been a great year for catching Redbreast. They seem to be pretty active on the River lakes as well! thumb

Hyco is pretty full, and I'm pretty sure they charge to come in and fish but I'm not sure how much. I usually hit the tailrace early in the morning on the days that I'm able to get a few hours of fishing in. Not too many tubers that far up.

Yea the tubers can go down all the way to Gruene. If I do fish that area it will be close to daylight up until about 10am. I drove by Cypress Park and it was loaded with both swimmers and tubers. It was around noon. hmmm

Side Note: Great seeing people enjoying summer! coolio

Great fish Will thumb It seems like every redbreast I've caught this year has been big too. All in that half pound or better range. I may need to check that area out too.

Thanks Laker One! This is my first year with the fly rod, and I'm already addicted.

Thanks Gitter Done! The summer tube hatch is a big part of the New Braunfels economy, so I try not to complain too much. All of the tubers I interacted with yesterday were friendly and seemed to be respectful of the river. Given the large amount of people that float the Guadalupe every year I'm pleasantly surprised at just how little trash is left behind. There will always be a few bad apples, but thankfully just a few.

Yes Sir the outfitters depend on the summer months for sure. With all the rain fall we have been having this should be a good season for them.

One more good rain for Canyon Lake to hit pool and the flow agreement will kick in. If that happens we are sure to have some holdover trout, as well as a healthier population of every other kind of fish we all enjoy pulling out of the Guadalupe.
