This thread is a wealth of information on carp fishing. It can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.

I go for simple - corn on a small gold hook.

Make a mixture of one cup crushed Wheaties, one cup flour and one cup of Magic Bait Chum (available from Walmart). Mix well dry. Then add Big Red soda a few spoonfuls at a time, mixing well, until a firm dough is formed.

Spool a braided 30 pound test line on your favorite rod and reel. Use a Palomar knot to tie a #8 treble hook to the end of the line. Do not use a weight or swivel - just the hook.

Mold a 3/4 inch diameter ball of the bait on the hook. Work it a few times to make it firm. Cast the bait to a likely spot carefully to avoid slinging the bait off.

Hold on to your rod. Laying the rod down is a good way to spend money. The carp will take the bait and run. Don't horse him. Their mouths are tender and you will pull the hook if you do. Use a net to land your fish. Most carp are lost trying to lift them out of the water.

While a treble hook helps hold bait on, they tend to really tear up a fish's mouth. Better to chum with canned corn and use a Carolina rig with a slip sinker and a strong small hook baited with several kernels of corn.

^^^^ cheers I have all the Euro gear which I love to fish with, but EVERY TIME I see a post like the above, I just want to grab 1 single rod (with the above rig), spend about 6.00 for enough bait for all day and just go catch some carp (or buffalo, or catfish). So much fun to get back to the basics once in a while. Thx for the post!
