A couple of friends and I fished with guide Kevin Kubiak on Lake Somerville yesterday. The day started out like a lot of others. Kevin worked five or six brush piles in the first couple of hours to help us put 15 keepers in the boat while figuring out the day's pattern.

Around 11, he had it dialed in and took us to a spot he thought might pay off and it did in a big way. For the next three hours we boated 60 keeper crappie up to 1.65 pounds, probably 40 or more dinks and two nice bass that weighed 7 and 5 pounds. Wrapped up a very fun trip at 2 p.m. with a three-man limit.

Most fish were caught around 12-feet deep. All caught on hand-tied jigs or plastics.

I've known Kevin for a few years from fishing against him in CAT tournaments. Only fished with him a couple of times, but both times he has worked hard to put a bunch of fish in the boat. If you're interested in fishing the lakes he guides on in Central Texas, he's definitely worthy of a call.

Thanks for the great trip, Kevin

Never a high school teacher, but did we ever slay the crappie on Somerville the other day!

I have never seen a brush pile produce fish after fish for around three hours straight.
Not all keepers, but a good mix of nice sized black and white crappie.
All fish caught on jigs, no minners on board.

Carl was the King when it came to big bass and crappie. Everyone else caught their fair share of crappie but not as big as King Carl! flehan

What an amazing day! fish

I'm always in a good mood when I'm fishing.
