It's fixing to be hot...How about some of y'all night fishermen sharing some night fishing tactics so some of us could try it out...I'm sure there are some things we need to know such as:
Which lights and light colors
Surface and or submerged lights
Types of structure and cover and depth
Live bait
Jig effectiveness at night
Boat and or pier/ bank
Or whatever you do to catch big ole nighttime slabs
I don't know what I dont know...haha haven't night fished for crappie since I was a boy pier fishing with my granddaddy...thanks

The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?

Tip your jig with a minnow or small shad and you'll have a lot better results. Look for a spot that has mercury lights or submerged green lights next to structure or docks that come on using a timer. Those spots will hold crappie and perch.
If you just drop a green light in any spot you'll get white bass action first most of the time. Even if you have crappie there the sandies will get your bait first. I fished a spot a week ago that I used to fish using a green light off the back of my boat and caught a huge cooler of crappie. I left the green light at home and relied strictly on the mercury light that comes on after dark at this dock. I knew the crappie were there because I would catch one every now and then with the green light but it attracted lots of bait which brought in stripers and sandbass in huge numbers. a 10-12 inch crappie is less likely to see such a situation as a feeding opportunity than a threat when big 30 inch stripers and huge largemouth come roaming by.
I tipped a jig with a minnow and got a hit on nearly every cast. I missed some, caught some dinks and bluegills but a lot of keeper crappie too.
Good luck to you.

I fish nights regularly with just LED lights so I can see what I am doing ... no lights in the water. Only thing I notice different than day fishing is the fish move up in the water. If it is 20' deep and you are catching fish on bottom, after dark in the same hole they will be 10' to 12' Another thing I noticed is that they like minnows better after dark, or a bigger jig.

When you say tip the jig with a minnow, do you mean a piece of a minnow or attach a minnow under the jig?

I use a minnow. It can be dead or alive. You need it for scent in my opinion, but who knows why fish do what they do. I just know it works.

Last night the bite hit when the moon was out. As soon as it got covered up is was off. Then it popped again after some clouds moved out. It was a good night. All fish caught on minnow tipped jigs.
