Last night they were on the top from 6pm till dark. Did not need live bait just something moving in the water. Felt sorry for those poor shad they could not get away. Been a long time since I saw that many fish on top for so long of a time. State Park area just follow the road out in the lake close eyes and listen for the sound of shad getting hammered. There was some line stretchers in the mix.

My son and I just returned from a 4 day fish-a-thon on Lake Whitney!

We caught lots of striper from midlake to the southend on live shad. Most areas held lots of 3lb fish but we found a few areas holding 5-10lb fish that were a blast to catch!

Most productive areas were edges of the river channel with standing timber, under schooling white bass, or edges of humps/flats near creek channels. We fished 20-24 depths on the edges near creek channels and 30-38 depths near the river channel. We were dropping shad 20-27' down to them!

PS - 8" gizzard shad are not to big, lol

Still looking for my Texas 20lber...

I arrived Friday and bait was super tough to catch! The lake was clear to the backs of coves and creeks. We caught bait, but lets say I was sick of the cast net by the time we had enough! Storms blew threw the remaining days, dirtying up the water in the backs of coves and feeder creeks making bait much easier to catch. It still wasn't as easy as the lakes I'm use to, but I was able to get a tank full within an hour.
