The HDS unit must be at least a GEN-3 unit in order to use Totalscan.

Not looking to start a argument or war But I had a garmin 441 S that died on me finally.I am looking to replace it With a Chart plotter that does side scan also I am torn between an HDS Lowrance and a garmin 74sv. Are there any links that I can go to to compare the 2 side-by-side As far as options and clarity ?

Maybe someplace like BassPro or Cabelas is about the only place where I can imagine you could compare them.

I was wondering if anyone on here is using the Airmar P66 transducer on a gen 3, and if so how does it compare with the HST-WSBL.

It seems that the TM150M gets the nod when I read about true chirpers. You might ask over on BBC if nobody else responds.

Third , if it is working off the HDS, will the external gps antenna make it hold closer ?

I've been wondering about this as well.... When I mark a spot on my console unit and then ask the xi5 to anchor on that particular waypoint. Will it use the GPS located inside the trolling motor or use the point one that is on the back of my boat?

I have had mine a few months. I am very happy. Quite a upgrade for me lots of bang for the buck. Fresh water and salt water general use. I am learning the side imaging. I am not that good at using it yet but am enjoying learning. It has every thing I need.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Alright, Jim Sr kind of shamed me into asking for some help. I picked up a used HDS12 Gen3, and bought a new Totalscan transducer. I'm very confident the PO was running a much more sophisticated setup that just a Totalscan transducer. The symptom is that the transducer and display aren't talking yet and the books don't help me much in describing what the system settings need to be to get me going. Reminds me of building my own computer before plug-and-play but without installation instructions.
I don't imagine this is a new question, but I'm getting older by the minute and reading a hundred pages of previous posts is going to take a lot of time. Sort of works against why we use sonar in the first place. If the answer is in an older post, let me know the number or who posted it, I think I can work with that. Otherwise, can someone help me work through the system settings I need?
Thanks all,
ed
