Bigeye tuna & flathead catfish were both unexpected catches and MUCH bigger than the fish I was actually after each time.

Sablefish because of all the time I spent researching these fish, figuring out how & where to find them in DEEP water, and can now consistently locate and catch them on every trip to Alaska.

Rainbow trout because it was the first fish that I cleaned without any help from my dad.

Shortspine thornyhead rockfish because it's a world record grin

Took me a few weeks to come up with the list, one fish at a time.

Congrats on the World Record! I've always thought how cool it would be to get one. I lived 10 minutes from the IGFA Hall of Fame Fishing Museum in Dania Beach, Florida for many years. Watched it when it was being built as Bass Pro was next door.

Once you get a base list I've found it helps to number them and save in a location you will remember and then continue to build on it. I've found that by doing this, it actually encourages (as if I needed encouragement LOL) to add new ones to the list.

p.s. I found a couple on your list I had caught but didn't have on my list....might be interesting to share lists.

I bought this fish I.D. book many years ago and just marked them off as I caught them. Highly recommend them as the pictures/illustrations are top notch in identification.

There is one made by the same folks that covers the Atlantic Ocean and one of the Gulf of Mexico. I stopped counting at 121 species from my kayak 5 years ago. Need to update my list as I have very few freshwater species compared to salt.

I can add a seagullfish and a coonfish to that list.
