If on a lake and they are near the surface, a lipless crankbait. Current fav is the BPS rattletrap in blue and silver. If deep, whatever slab they want. If in a creek it has varied over the years from Roadrunners, to in-line spinners, to curly-tailed grubs in yellow or white depending on water clarity.

Since I only fish from the shore, I use a Kastmaster. They seem to hit it as well as anything, and you can cast it a mile.

The Kastmaster is also a great lure I've used for decades for fishing the white bass "jumps" - aka when they're schooling/feeding on the surface.

Slab and fly combo. Can fish it on bottom, mid range and on top. All you need to catch sandbass at any depth.

Slab/jig or fly combo for numbers definitely. My favorite way to catch them though is at night with a 1/8 oz jig head and H&H Baby Bull Minnow.
