Get a 4/0 hook and a chunk of worthy bait and bigger things happen much more often
I run hand lines from the bank as a kid for likely 10 yrs before having the coin for a rod/reel
I can still rig and cast a Coke bottle special as good as an ABU anyday
Dinks bore me pretty quick so i always up the ante to push off the dinks

Thx, SARG. Yup, there are way bigger fish in these waters, but I don't want to eat big fish. Although for some reason I haven't had much luck with chunk bait.

It's interesting that you get bored when only catching dinks. I get bored when not catching anything, so I'm always gearing down to catch smaller fish. For me it's quantity more than quality, food more than sport.

But think you're right in that running a larger hook size and a larger bait will entice larger fish. Really the fish caught in this video was nothing but an up-sized/adapted version of my bluegill rig. Just as you suggest the next step is to run a 3/0 or 6/0 hook tied with the same feathers with a larger piece of strip bait.

I take an incremental, experimental approach. I started with bluegill, figured out what worked, then upsized a bit to find larger fish. That's how all my videos have gone from a long time. I'd rather catch something small, know that fish are there and that I have an established pattern, then upsize over time.

Yeah, man, handlines are cheap. That's the main reason I run handlines. I just don't have the money to run rod and reel, and I have come to prefer handlines because they're so simple.

See so the next trip out, you see me running the same rig only 3/0 hooks because that's what i have on hand. Then 6/0 hooks, which I have on hand as well, but can't really tie them on my fly tying vice.

I've also found that a fly or bucktail jig tipped with bait out fishes bait or an artificial alone. This is much how striper and saltwater fishermen approach trolling. They're always tipping an artificial bait with a piece of strip bait, something you don't see much in the catfish world.

So my YouTube channel servers to document that process. So it's sort of weird to watch one of my videos out the 150 to 200 videos I produce every year. You never know when or where people are watching my videos. There was a long time were I caught nothing. Then I started catching something. Then I started catching something larger as you see here.

Ever use cut skipjack? I primarily target larger cats for catch and release on Wheeler Lake.

Fishin', man, I have never been able to consistently catch skipjack. My little boat with oars, I don't have a way to hold in that really swift water. Since I'm catching for food, bluegill make the better choice for me because I'll keep most of them to eat.

Once I get tired of bluegil, I'll start catching fillet-sized fish. I'm really fishing for anything that will bite the hook.

The next trip I'm gonna up size my hooks to 3/0. I also might try a 6/0 main hook snelled to a 3/0 stinger.

Saltwater guys use cut plug herring where they cut the head off at a compound angle, making the bait twirl in the water giving off lots of vibrations just like a spinner blade. Wonder if that would work with bluegill, especially since they have such a flat wide body?

I had a couple short strikes the last time out, so it might be time to add stinger hook.

When they run upriver to spawn in March, I stand on the bank below G dam and catch them on white curly tail jigs. Freeze them in ziplock bags until I'm ready to use as bait.
