Hi! I am currently trying to get into Baitcasting after using my spinning reel for about a year, and one of the smaller reasons is because I would like to be able to feel/see a fish biting but I don't know what kind of rod would be able to do that. My rod budget is about $180 or under right now. Planning on going with the SMOKE PT reel. I caught what looks to be a three pounder a while back and I just remember how there was barely any bend to my ugly stick and I would love to have a casting rod that shows some bend when a fish bites, and when a fish is on, a full bend of the rod would be nice. Thanks!

H2o xpress are my go to rods over almost any of the others I have and I've got some decent rods. They're very sensitive and I've never had any break on me , and if for some reason they do I can take em back to academy

Go get one of the new Lew's Mach rods for $80 at academy. A medium fast taper would be a good one, or even a Med-Hvy.
Then spend the other $100 on a reel. Lew's also makes good reels for the money.
I almost bought one of the Mach rods today, but decided to get an American Hero combo instead of cannibalizing a reel from another rod.

Great rods for $99 and an exchange warranty is nice too.

I was going to suggest Powell rods for over the counter rods. I have several of them and really like them. Two rods that I do not have yet are the Ethos and a TFO but both of those rods get great reviews.
If you want a custom rod where you choose what you want including the color accents you should call Ron @ Reel Time rods. He can make you whatever you want. His drop shot rods are the best I have ever used.

For a budget of $180 let me suggest ARK or Dobyns Sierra

I haven't tried the other two I bought yet, but, if they are the same balance and quality as the 7'3" heavy...I'll be a believer. The two others I bought Wednesday night were a 7'6" XH and a 7'0" "medium Cranker".

Steez,
I have the same 7'6" rod you got and I throw deep diving CBs with it... And it does well with finesse soft plastics as well. Very versatile rod and I bought mine for $49, when they were on sale. Haven't tried the Xtreme rod yet, but if it is like the Ethos, should be a good rod. I STILL prefer my Dobyns rods over them, but for a knock around Saturday afternoon tank fishing, they are worth the money and a great exchange policy. DO NOT LIKE the 7'10" or 7' 11" Cranker, not enough backbone in it for me, but that is just me, probably Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Steez, to you think the 7-3 heavy would make a good hollow body frog rod?

Thanks Steez, interested in the 7'3" H2O rod as well. How does the action compare to a 735?

For $180, I would go with a G. Loomis E6X. That's G. Loomis' low end model but it's high end compared to any other rod in that price range. That rod is filled with features and booming sensitivity. That would be my choice. If you don't want to spend that much then my next choice would be a Falcon LowRider 20 (retails for $160 or so) or a Faclon Bucoo SR ($100). Both of those rods are great as well!
