Man I'm having the same problem with my 225 Mariner. I replaced the VST and both ECM's and my fuel pump still wont come on. The old fuel pump is still working but neither would come on when i put them on my motor. Im lost as well. I also replaced the fuel filter. I already have a wiring harness guess I'll try that now. Bout to sell the ole Champion as i dont fish much anymore. I`ll be glued to this post.

1997 EFI Mariner Mag 225. Been a damn good motor.

I did just find this hose 90%+ clogged with something (looked plastic or rubber or combination) and replaced the hose. Dennis Hoffman has my ECU and is supposed to let me know by Monday if that is part of the problem. Not sure if it is a combination of issues. Either way that hose had to be part of the problem.

both ecm's?

does tha pump run if you disconnect tha ecu leads and go straight battery + and -..? if it does you can by pass tha ecu by using tha purple (positive) and any block ground to pump.. it should come on with key.. can be a temporary fix or know several that have it that way usin' a relay and ran them for a very long time.......

Yes both. Pump will not come on at when i turn the key on. It will run when I hook it straight to the battery.

Sounds like a harness issue. Pins can and do get bent, corroded, wires break and/or corrode internally. Based on finding that blocked fuel hose, I would disassemble the whole fuel system and clean, rebuild pulse pump, and have the injectors cleaned and flow tested.
Nothing harder to diagnose on an outboard than an intermittent electrical issue.

That is a real bad place to have contamination, behind all of the screens and filters. You will need to have all of the fuel injection rail behind that hose cleaned, including the injectors and the fuel regulator.

Thread was hijacked a little so back to original.
Anybody ever just give up? Dennis Hoffman said ECU had intermittent driver that was bad and tested and fixed it. Mechanic gets it and today says fuel pump still not getting signal from ECU. He has changed wiring harness so it's not a loose pin. I'm stuck in the middle. Any ideas? I'm fixing to load this sob on a pallet and drop it in the lake.

Hook the pump direct. - to the top ECU nut and + to the purple wire on a wire buse to the left of the starter solenoid.

He originally said ECU was good, then called back later that day and said after digging farther the intermittent driver was bad. Mechanic is supposed to see if it will work by skipping ECU to fuel pump tomorrow. He doesn't have another Merc EFI in shop to swap ECU's and see how each reacts.

It was mentioned earlier, but have you confirmed the battery voltage. I just got done with some performance issues on my 98 225EFI. It was running erratically, but only on extended trips. Turns out, alternator had given up on me but my on board charger was was throwing a smoke screen for it. It would take a full day of running for the battery to drop low enough for the issues to surface.
