I am looking at retiring my MotorGuide Trolling motor and getting a new MinnKota I-Pilot trolling Motor. I currently have a 24V system and the larger MinnKota's require 36V. Is it worth the upgrade to a 36V system? Worth the extra weight of a battery?

Also, cant decide what MinnKota Trolling Motor to go with and the MinnKota website does not a have a good comparison tool.

Any thoughts oh wise ones of the TFF.

The 36 gives you more power with less draw. I upgraded last year and wish I had done it a long time ago.

What kind of boat? There's always going to be a trade off with adding weight. Sounds like your boat has been operating with 24v so why change? I traded a 36v for a24v because the 36 was too much for my boat and did not handle well. There was no big difference in speed between the two and I have never ran the batteries low on the 24.

Tbs,
I just mounted mine . Went from a 36 to a 24.
From 112 to a 80lb. I talked to many people and had a post here asking.
The price and challenges of charging four batteries is why I changed.
I will let you know the difference if any after I test it this evening

Unless you're a serious tournament fisherman or just too lazy to plug in a charger every night an 80lb with two group 31 batteries will do for most applications. I run an 80lb MG X5i with 2 group 31's on a 22' bay boat and it will pull it all day without issue. Another thing to consider with a 36v is not only adding an addition 70 or so pounds of a third battery but storage space for it and a new battery charger for the extra bank.

I went out,, for the hour I can't complain, not much wind and learning the ipilot but when I bumped it up to 10 it sped right along.
