I have a 2007 Mercury Pro XS 225. Today I had the 4 beep alarm going off today while idling in some real rough water. Boat ran fine after that for a little bit then the alarm came back, motor bogged down and died. It has not wanted to crank since then. I pulled the fuel filter drain and drained some gas which appeared to have some water. Continued to drain until no signs of water, but motor still won't crank. What else do I need to chase this problem down?

Pull the cowling & check the air compressor, if you cannot turn the fly wheel it is a possibility that the air compressor seized. I had this year model & went through 5 air compressors.

It takes quite a while to get the water cleared out of the fuel system on this motor.

I plan on changing the fuel filter next, but I'm just trying to figure out if this problem alone would lead to boat not starting. It tries to crank, just doesn't sound like its getting enough gas to get over the hump.

Yes You will need a suction bulb to get the water at the bottom under the fuel filter. Don`t even try to change the filter without the special drive socket for it. You can get the filter with the socket.
