What is the blue dye or color that I am seeing in several of the local ponds around the mid-cities? If I had to guess, I would guess it is some sort of algae or grass killer. Has anybody ever caught fish in this "blue" water? I have never had any luck when I see this and just keep driving when I come across one of these ponds....

I water skied in college and the ski lakes are dyed green to keep light out and any plants from growing. We didn't fish them but I once saw someone pull a small channel cat out of one so it can have fish but I can't imagine there would be very many.

That makes sense about keeping the veg from going wild. The sad thing is I know there are fish in some of these ponds...I just never seem to get any bites once the color is added.

This is pretty common in well-managed community ponds. I believe the dye is there to reduce the light and control the algae, or else all the pods would be overgrown with algae.

And yes, the fishing sucks for several days after they add the color. From my experience it starts to pick back up after 3 or 4 days. If it's still a dark color it means it was added recently and I do the same as you and just keep on driving.

Or at least not for that reason.

I know of one pond in particular in Farmers Branch that is loaded with big bass and huge bluegills that has that dye added. Right after they treated it, they put a fence all the way around it.The walking trail is there, and it is surrounded by offices, but no more fishing. I went by there during the spawn and saw some huge bass on beds, hugging the bank. I used to fish that pond when I was in high school and it was a watering hole for the horses the original owner used to board there. Now it's an office park surrounded by businesses of all manner and sort.
