Normally would be out kayak fishing this time of year. But, not able to go today. Decided to hit the local pond for some switch rod casting practice. Fun stuff... windy but no issues with it. Even caught a couple of Bass! Video.

Agree, it is fun...but more importantly it is a terrific technique in certain situations... like in fishing a wide river for these silver and king salmon

Nice fish Meadowlark! Have not gotten any Bruisers like those with the Switch Rod. Have had fun with Striped Bass at Denison, whatever bites at LLELA, and the Trout at TRWD Flyfest back in March!

Have you tried spey casts with that setup? I find it more enjoyable than overhand casts on my 2wt. It's a little challenging in stillwater, but it can be done. And when you pull off a perfect snap T, that line flies.

Yes but need more practice on the snap t... do like the snake roll, have used it at times when there is no room behind even with a switch cast or roll cast.

The snap T is often described as a straight up and down motion, but I've found that using more of an inverted "V" shaped motion to work better. But, I prefer the circle "C" over the snap T. I find the C moves more line and is easier to control.

Have fun!

Was a tough round but at least others in our group caught fish. Rigged the fly rod with a sabiki rig and mounted the railblaza rod holder to the little kayak. Holder works well; fly rod stayed put... Windy Day at Clear Lake.

PS: Lesson learned this outing, watch for jet skiers without side numbers. Likely they did not take the PWC Course.

Finally made it to Texoma for some kayak fishing. Lost one Striper, caught one Striper, and caught one Largemouth Bass... they were feeding nearby and around the kayak several times. But, only able to get the one Striper to stay on the hook! Today's Video.

Brought a fly rod with a sinking tip; plan was to troll Clouser Minnows. Ended up staying with spinning gear and using a Tandem-Rigged Bucktail Jig and Fluke as well as a surface popper.

Fun with the micro fly rod we made years back. This one was the telescoping one that collapses to a length that fits in the backpack that your's truly uses for work. Good for those times when "fishy" waters are nearby while out during the work week! Video Post.

Tinkering with net and plastic lacing to make a tangle free replacement net for trout fishing. Still making a wooden frame but did get a prototype done and put it on the trout net we had on hand. It's tangle free - does not tangle with fishing flies, has a deeper pocket, and can handle an 8lbs weight... Post.

Able fish a few of the fishing flies for trout Friday and fish the micro skagit head on the 9' 5wt on a preseason trip to the Blue River in OK or trout in the Catch and Release Section. Lots of walking and sturck out on trout. But, did get the lay of the area; next time will use a shorter path for less walking and more fishing! Video Post.

...as in past years, we like to modify the schedule posted by TPWD by sorting the info in a spreadsheet. This year we do it again. Check it out for those planning to fish this trout stocking season in Texas.

We do recommend checking TPWDs updates as schedules change due to weather, unexpected things, etc... in our case, we print out the document and pen and ink it with updates as the season progress. Spreadsheets are useful but still not as fun as fishing! PDF Post.

Merry Christmas! Windy and cold yesterday. Tried fishing flies and then corn, and salmon eggs... no takers. Then, went to Power Bait in the size 16 PBRG (Power Bait Rainbow Glitter) and PBPTN (Power Bait Pink Trout Nuggets) variants, add the "slack line" technique where we don't hold the rod, so we can keep our hands in our pockets to stay warm, three of us limited out before it got colder and windier! Video Post.

Lots of fun fishing the small pond at Waterloo in Denison. Did see some trout rising and feeding on black bugs hatching but none wanted a fishing fly.

Fun time yesterday catching trout at Waterloo Park Pond for a catch and cook video. Also, got some underwater video of trout taking Powerbait and Corn. Good to see how the trout were taking out bait. Gives an idea what we were sensing each time trout would nip at our bait. Fishing Videos. Did get to use the Micro Fly Rod to catch and miss a couple trout else it was all bait... corn in particular

Still working the uw video and although we did not get the on the fly rod, here is the method we used...Had to go with light lining with corn using ultralight spinning gear. May be of interest to some... Trout wanted corn and preferred the rig to drift in the current instead of sitting on the bottom. For more on light lining, we posted a video... Post.

Rained this morning, so did not plan to fish... ended up having a few drinks and then a quick trip to a local pond flyfishing for anything that would bite. Struckout but did get some great flycasting practice in. Rounded out the day compiling past trips to Texoma kayak fishing! Fun times in warm weather. Videos.

Fished Rowlett Community Park Pond Saturday. Been a while since we last fished the pond but luckily, had Google Maps to guide us there. Still have to pass through a subdivision to access the park. Else, it remains as we remembered it... baseball fields, a landfill, and two ponds.

Bite was slow with one big Shad foul-hooked on the Near Deere, and no fish taken with bait or with a Super Duper. Stuck it out for about an hour and half, then moved around looking for activity... action picked up in a cove near a feeder creek.

Limited out with five, and released two others. Also, saw one fisherman land a nice Catfish! Fun stuff with the added bonus of the trout being larger than ones caught a Bethany Lakes and Waterloo! Trout Fishing Rowlett Community Park Trout... video.

PS: Rio Trout Max is working out nicely on the 4wt flyrod!

- Sounds like it was slow -- which is what I have been hearing all season (and experienced it early on). Guess that water flow is still way low?

Water flow is low compared to other years. I think it's more timing the trout stocking... seeing others doing well the days after a stocking.

Not able to fish today but did get a round in yesterday. Went with the 5wt lined with the OPST Commando Head. Struck out at Murphy in the morning, but did get some great practice in. Later, stopped at Bethany and caught three little Bass on a Purple Damsel Fly, and a bigger one on a White Foam Grasshopper. Editing the video still but here is a quick update.. Post.

Made it to McKinney this morning and fished for a couple of hours. Caught two, lost two, then had leave them biting. Power Bait, Power Worms, and corn were working. Olive Near Deere under a strike indicator worked, too. Did try a new recipe for the trout caught Friday... broiled it this time. Tasty dish, keeping this one for future 20" and larger trout!

Here is a quick demo of the OPST Commando Head that we use with a 5wt flyrod for one-handed spey casting. Nothing fancy... Switch Cast and a modified "Perry Poke" gets an easy 21 yard cast. Lots of fun casting this rig; even more fun when a fish is on the line! Quick Demo - OPST Commando Head.

Been meaning to get this video out; it answers the question of why we like one-handed spey casting...? First part demos different rods we used before settling on a 6wt Switch Rod and a 5wt Trout Fly Rod lined with OPST Commando Head. Second part are clips of past trips using the fly rods including one that was not in the first part. One-Handed Spey Casting.

Started Sunday morning with a swing and miss. Decided to move to another spot just down the road… Windy and cold, did not plan to fish for long. But, then got a bite on the PMOT… turned out to be a nice Bluegill! Was about ready to head home, but decided on “one more cast”... put on a strike indicator and went with a COAF Guadalupana for the fishing fly. Took a little to figure out the hookset but ended up losing count of how many were caught and released. Even came back later that evening and lost count again of what was caught and released. Will get a video posted of the evening round later in the week. For now, here is the video from this morning! Out and About Sunday Morning Pond Fishing.

Struck out the other day fishing the pond behind In-N-Out Burger. Decided to give it another try Monday. Things started slow but did pick up with Bluegill. No Bass but the Near Deere fished 2.5 feet under a strike indicator were the key! Did have make a few mistakes as well left them biting because we had to get back home to feed the dog. Fun stuff!

More fun pond fishing! This time tried a pond using a 4wt and traditional fly line, then later with a one-handed spey fly line.  Really liking the one-handed spey fly line! Cottonwood Creek Trail Pond Fishing.

Sidetracked fishing today but did get the video of last week's kayak fishing. Struck out but still a fun time, tried different techniques to get fish to bite... no luck. Did have fun testing out the new Pelican Catch 100 kayak; really like being able to stand up in it. Hope to use it fly fishing! May be of interest to some thinking about a kayak for fly fishing...skip to the last 40sec.

Was a tough round fishing last week. Decided to take the jon boat and put out jug lines instead of the kayak and flyrods. Only caught one Channel Catfish that we let go. We know the Catfish are there; just got to keep at it… plus always good to recall past trips like the one where we caught a 33″ catfish jug lining (added a snippet of that trip to the video below as a reminder!) Tough Round Fishing Lavon...

Did make a trip to the Lower Illinois River in Oklahoma for some trout fishing. Caught several trout and other fish using an Olive Near Deere while fishing partner used a bubble float rig to catch them with Trout Worms. Only fished for a couple of hours before they started generating. Still a fun time and despite the high temps, the water was chilly while wet wading the river.

Will post a video of the trip later!

Made it to the Lower Illinois River earlier this month – June 2, 2018. Had a fun time wet wading the river for a chance at trout and other fish! Went with the 5 weight fly rod and one-handed spey casting with the OPST Commando Head. Used an olive Near Deere for the fishing fly. Fishing partner opted for ultralight spinning gear and Power Bait Trout Worms. Tip broke on the rod but he did manage to catch trout using a bubble fly rig!

Your’s truly only caught one trout but did miss several more. Did catch a White Bass and a Striped Bass (little one), too. Hot day but the water was cold. And, even though the water was murky, the fish were biting. Ended up calling the trip short because they started generating power. No worries… made it to OKC early and checked out Bricktown… cool place!
