How do you setup your live bait rigs when chasing striper?
How long would perch last if I filled livewell in not with our well water to avoid any legality issues with transporting fish? Since folks have mentioned difficulty locating shade and up until this trip have fished for sand Bass with lures exclusively?

For the first question I typically run my rigs with 20lb main line and 14-17 lb floro leader about two feet. 1 oz egg sinker with a glass bead between the weight and knot. Hook size depending on size of bait but typically 1/0-3/0. Bigger shad may go larger. I prefer gamaktsu octupus or Mustad thin wire. The heavier the hook the quicker your shad die.
Second question. Perch keep easy if bait tank is clean. Bubbler works better than a circulating tank in my experience.
As far as shad goes they aren't usually hard to find regardless of lake. Threadfins are 3-4am baits. Turn on lights and anchor in 10-20ft of water on a hump, flat mouth of creek etc... They usually come. Have a spotlight to shine across to see where they are flipping. Be patient... You can catch them during the day but you have to know how to read your graph.
Gizzards are what I call mid morning afternoon bait. Seems hotter it gets the easier to catch. They like dirty water so that usually means north or the back of creeks or coves.... Regardless of time of day. Again look and listen for the "flip"

Basic slip sinker rig. 1oz egg, bead, barrel swivel, 24"ish leader and I typically run a 3/0 Gama Octopus Circle. Maybe bigger if I had to use Perch.

Scott, I used to love to fish PK for striper. We'd camp at the State Park, catch our perch around the banks there, then offer 'em up to the striper. Never caught any huge fish, but limits were not usually a problem. We used the live well to keep perch in originally, but I ended up buying a shad tank later on.

Here's a tip on using perch. My best results have always been with using sunfish that have some red or orange coloring on them. Don't know why the plain green/brown sunfish don't work as well for me.

Everyone is different but here's what I do. I use a 12 lb test line tied to a barrel swivel with a 3/4 oz egg sinker above the swivel. Below this is about 18-24 inches of 10 lb test fluorocarbon line. The hook is a small number 4 Gamakatsu Octopus or a Mustad Wacky worm hook. I put the hook through the shad's bottom lip. I never hook both lips as it seems to kill the shad. Perch I hook through both lips. Once ID a school of fish, I drop the shad down about two feet above them. I set my drag extremely loose, as I use spinning reels and want them to act like bait casters and let the fish have lots of line when he grabs the shad. I put the rod in a rod holder and start working on the second pole. The goal here is to allow a smaller striper to get the shad totally in his mouth before getting resistance. With bigger fish this is not an issue. Usually, I never get the second pole in the water if the fish I've marked are actually stripers. Line will scream out at a high rate, I take the rod out of the rod holder and give the drag a half turn and set the hook, although the striper probably is already hooked. Typically, they will run out 100 yards or so and have a couple short runs at the boat before I net them and put them in the ice. If I get two rods in the water I either spot lock if there is wind or put the boat in a very small circle at less than 1 MPH. If the fish don't take the shad after 5-10 minutes I go somewhere else. it's been my experience with shad that stripers will take them instantly regardless of whether or not they are hungry. As for Perch in a live well, I think you'll have no trouble. I've had over a dozen in a cool bubbles minnow bucket with a small aerator. perch will last but shad will get red nose, make a lot of foam and begin to die. Before I got my shad tank I would use two 5 gallon buckets and try to keep a half dozen shad alive by swapping them back and forth. A lot of trouble but shad die fast. Perch will likely work at PK because the large number of small stripers and the huge sandbass schools have lowered the shad population from last year. Good Luck.

Is this Mr. Mike? This is Marcus who joined you on the boat a few years ago. My girls and myself are at the campground in the Cliffs. If you guys are free for company tomorrow then maybe we could stop by and say hello. I'll be fishing around the marina and beach area. I'll be with my blonde beauty and two blonde girls. 5 and 2.

Marcus: This is me. My wife has some friends out tomorrow so I'll be on " Be nice to my friends duty". If you are here Sunday or Monday that would be better, as they will go back by then.
Have a huge box of fish to fillet this morning. nary a striper in the bunch though. I caught some very nice threadfins and caught nothing on them except a huge Bluegill. How that bluegill ate that threafin is beyond me. Caught all the fish other than the bluegill on jigs, as it seems everything is triggering right now on fry.

Best of luck with the ladies. I still have a bottle of vino to pass along if your wife is interested. . I caught a few catfish yesterday and the bite was so slow last night so I called it early. My cousin comes in tonight and we may try to fish some lights. Give me a ring if your up for a visit.

Good luck at the lights. Getting some light rain now and I see the sandies just woke up and are busting the water.

Which story? The one of you getting butt hurt about being run off a private dock trespassing? Our the one of me confronting and chewing/out cursing a bunch of drunk kids that ignored the no wake bouys and waked my boat along with many others? Yes I mistaked them for you because their boat was named striperking but the [censored] chewing would have happened regardless. You're such a tool and troll... You make me laugh little man
