Howdy. I recently acquired a 1984 Evinrude 40hp (attached to a 1983 Alumacraft boat). The boat/engine has been sitting in a covered slip in the water without moving for about 10 years. I removed the engine cowl and the motor is full of dirt dobber nests. Also the part of the lower unit that has been sitting in the water (along with the hull) is coated in years of algae, etc to the extend a water hose with sprayer attached did not do much to remove it. Does anyone have any advice on how to approach the engine to see whether it is salvageable and also what to use to get the years of algae etc off the hull and lower unit? I was told by a non-mechanic to remove the spark plugs to test for compression. Im sure I will need to have the ignition key? If the owner has lost the key, what are my options at that point??
