This is why I didn't worry about getting it networked. I've got my "milk run" piles saved to the memory channels. When I want to find a different one, I get close with the big motor, throw the trolling motor down and when I see the pile coming up on the sonar on the bow, I hit anchor. You're always going to catch it in the cone of the front sonar before you're actually on top of it anyway. Jacob, I'm the same way. I'm just asking the question I did regarding an external antenna. I think putting it over the transducer that you would use to mark waypoints would be the most accurate. I need all the help I can get.

OK, I opened a can of worms!
I guess I can use a cheap finder on front not hooked to NMEA using sonar from built in transducer and then have a nice console unit hooked to NMEA 2K and wired to XI5 and when I want to spot lock on top of a brush pile, just use the remote and put trolling motor on top of pile then hit anchor.

There are other reasons for wanting a networked unit up front You view sidescan or di from the front unit using the transom mounted transducer You are not limited to the 8 presets on your remote. You can just get close to your spot, drop the motor, enter the waypoint, Start fishing. You can use the front unit to jog . My front unit is within easy reach of my chair, I find easier to use than the remote. Good luck Mo

I can't remember now, but isn't there an offset setting on your fishfinder that will compensate for how far the transducer is from the unit? Maybe not... Also, the wind plays tricks too. If you're anchored with your trolling motor on top of a pile and you mark it on your console fishfinder, it will be off by that distance. Also if the wind is blowing from the opposite direction next time, it will put the rear of your boat over the pile instead of the trolling motor.

OK, I bought a Lowrance HDS9 Gen 2 Touch with no transducer. The site says I need a StructureScan HD transducer to have downimaging. Will I be happy with the $100 transducer instead of the $300 transducer. Can I use a cheap fishfinder that I already have on the trolling motor and hook just to the transducer line and hook the HDS9 to the NMEA port and control the XI5 with it? Then later on get an HDS7 for the front and NMEA 2000 it into the series.

You aren't going to like my answer. . Put your 9 on the bow, network to the xi5. Use if to control the xi5. When you can, get a 12 gen 3 with si/ di for the console, network it all. Then you can control xi5 from either unit. Most people that I know rarely use si/di from the bow. When you are in search mode, you will want to be at the console, using big motor. Good luck. Mo

Total Scan Transducer Hodges Marine has the Total Scan Transducer for $219 and if you purchase it before the 31st it qualifies for a $100 rebate from Lowrance. You wont be disappointed.
