Recently upgraded to dual HDS 12s on the console and another on the bow. My current cranking battery is a size 27 with 800 CCA. First tournament with the new units, the cranking battery was used up when I went to crank it up to head back to the ramp. Granted, that was after an 8+ hour day. My question is do most folks with this setup have a larger cranking battery with more capacity (maybe a dual purpose) or a 'house' battery to run the miscellaneous things? Thanks in advance!

Lowrance units use lots of juice. Biggest battery you can get.

The HDS 12 Gen 3 units are listed with a 2.0 amp power draw. The comparable Helix 12 Chirp/SI/GPS units are listed with a 1.75 amps draw. The Helix 12 MEGA units actually lead the charge with a 3.0 amp draw.

I know I need to go bigger. The question remains whether that involves getting a bigger battery to replace the existing one or adding an additional battery to power the graphs, pumps, lights, etc.

Either is a solution to the problem. Are you more concerned about weight and space (additional battery) or money ($350 battery mentioned above)

Why isn't it hooked up to a separate battery? My cranking battery is only used to to start/run the OB. The accessory battery runs everything else.

Chasinbass, I'm open to either option, just wanted to see if others have had this issue and what setups are common. It seems that both are fairly common. I'm leaning toward a single battery with enough CCA to crank/run the OB and enough RC to run the accessories. Spend a little extra $ to save a little weight and still be able to use the existing 3-bank charger to cover all the batteries.

Fishin' Nut, I don't currently have an accessory battery. I have 2 TM batteries and a starting battery. Until the recent sonar upgrade, the existing starting battery was enough to run things for a full tournament day.
