Just wondering if anyone has been to Denison lately? Thinking about going this Sunday. Just starting to learn to how to fly fish. Any tips or pointers will definitely be appreciated!

Biggest tip is, go to the TPWD site and find out which part is Texas and which is Oklahoma. You'll need an Oklahoma license as well as Texas if you choose to roam very far. The Texas side is all slicker than snot rocks with surprise drop-offs. Some good fishing, but that's the topography. The Oklahoma side has some nice sandy wading. I'd suggest getting the Oklahome license as well, even if only a daily.

Streamers, streamers, streamers. Clousers or anything that looks like a shad, or a piece of a shad.

Not looking for a debate but here is the lay of the land.......

If you bank fish from the Texas side, then you just need a Texas license. As soon as you put a foot in the river from the Texas bank, you are in Oklahoma and need an Oklahoma license. The border is the Texas' water edge. You will want to get the Oklahoma license.

Oh yeah, don't yell, "I got a big one!!", either, you will be surprised how many folks pop up out of the rocks and start casting over the top of you. Right ElectricSixes? hehehehehe

Lol ok will do!! Thanks fellas! I checked the generator schedule but it says January? Maybe I'll have to call them and tell them that. Buddy of mines told me to call the day before I go to make sure. I'll also be bringing my surf rod in case they are generating. I have clousers and wooly buggers. Will 12# flouro be ok to use as a leader?

Generating 4h in the evening on weekdays, not at all on weekends. That's been true for ~3 weeks, but it can change at any time. So can their forecast, though.

Agree with FishyB on the state boundaries. To be safe, don't get wet below the dam without a current OK license (unless you are over 65). Challenging and interesting place to fish. You never know what might hit your fly, and you never know what you might become tangled in while wading, so carry a nice sharp knife and keep in handy.

As mentioned by others, wading can be interesting. There are a lot of hooks, lures, fishing line, and other garbage in the water. Sturdy wading boots are good idea plus the rocks are very slippery.

A few general comments. For a while before and after the generation releases either start or stop are usually the best times to catch Stripers in the river. Usually the start of the release is best, but sometimes they bite better as it stops. The fish seem to know the release schedule better than the COE.

Fishing tends to be better and more crowded during the water release.

It is difficult to wade during a release, but you can fish from the bank.

Due to the slick rocks it can slow to exit the river. So, get out when they blow the horn. The rocks are difficult to see once the water starts rising.

There are rock piles that will allow you wade a large section of the river when not releasing. But be aware that there is a limit to how close you can legally get toward the dam.

During a release, drifting your fly along the seam between faster and slower water usually works.

Be prepared to lose flies if you try to fish along the bottom. It is very difficult to retrieve a fly that gets caught in discarded fishing line. If they are not releasing, you can use topwater popper to keep a streamer suspended off the bottom in the slower water (hopper-dropper style).

If you plan to wade, OK owns all of the river. That means you need an OK license if your feet get wet.

I fly fished the river below the dam this morning. Water came on at 8:00am and they turn it off at 10:00pm the last few days. I do not think that it will change until the lake goes down a foot or so. I also fished there yesterday morning when the water came on and the fish were feeding on the surface just above the pylons as the water comes on. They are generally in the middle when this occurs but can be right at the bank. It is easy to see that these fish are in the 5 lb range with some larger fish mixed in. The best opportunities for fly fishing are on the Texas side when they are generating.
No need for sink tip ling you will stay hung up more often that not. White clousers are a good choice but most any color will work. They need to be about the size of a threadfin shad.
You will have plenty of company this weekend but will also have a chance at some great stripers!!!

Was a bust! caught 1 small striper probably 14" and not on a fly... Couldnt fly fish because they were already generating when i got there. I got there at 645a. It was slow for everybody there. Maybe 15 guys at most there. Oh well maybe next time. ill just keep practicing fly fish at my local pond for bream and bass lol. Tight lines yall
