Been catching some good crappie lately at the docks and like to keep them alive till I'm done fishing for the day. I have a cheap basket from walmart but when I catch more than 10, they die off pretty quick. Does anybody know of a good fish basket that won't fall apart or a DIY basket I could make? Thanks everyone

Academy has some large baskets that easily fit 20-25 fish in. I am not sure how much they are though. Make sure to put the basket down 10 -15 ft to help them stay alive longer.

I was looking at those, know someone who's got one. Wasn't sure if there was another brand etc that people like. I have seen some out at the slips my boat is at that are cylinder shaped but never seem to see the owners of the baskets to ask where they got it.

Likely not the basket its self other then the size of They do need room to breath and if there isnt sufficient air at your hanging depth that will kill them too.

That's what I figured, so I'm going to use it for shad/bluegill instead and try to find a bigger basket

Think I may just make one out of a laundry basket and put some pool noodles on it to keep it up out of water

Just a tip from a sadder, wiser angler. If you get a big ole wire basket, be sure to put some zip ties on the bottom flap to keep the weight of the fish from warping the bottom ring, letting the flap get on the outside of the basket, and letting fish slide out to freedom every time you pull it up to add a fish. Ask me how I know of such things. :-(
Yes, Brazos is my real name.

Here is a couple of pics of the one that I made. It works great. The funnel on top allows you to sink the basket to just below the bottom of the funnel. When you catch one just throw it in. There's a door on the side that allows easy access to remove fish. Cost was about 30 dollars.

Ended up buying a plastic storage container with a lid today at walmart on clearance. Going to drill holes in it, ziptie the top on and make a door in it so I can drop fish in then sink it. If it doesn't work, I wasted $3 and some time. Won't be used year round anyway

Rather than trying to keep them alive, I put them in a cooler on ice. That gives me more time to clean them, and they don't flop around or bleed while I'm cleaning. Not nearly as messy and hardly any blood to scrub off fillets.

I have a lid for the top of the funnel and I can sink the basket down as far in the water as need be. I've kept fish alive in for a week. The only time the fish are in there that long is when they are just not biting and I can put 3 or 4 keepers in each time I fish and after I have amassed 10 or 12 I can head to the cleaning dock.
