Hi all,

My family and I are going to Lake O the Pines for 2 weeks starting this coming weekend. I would like to try and get my kids (8 and 10) into some crappie just so I can try to get them hooked on fishing. We are going to be staying at the Brushy Creek camp ground.

From what I am reading/seeing I am thinking we need to fish in 15-25 FOW around the brush, but I just want to make sure that is correct before we get there.

Also what color jigs would you recommend for this time of year?

Any help advice would be appreciated smile

Thanks!
Kyle

It's been a few weeks since I have been there, but 15' was the magic depth then. Try a couple different colors and let the fish tell you what they want. They only wanted chartreuse last time I went. Good luck!

Last week 15' and brush= a limit, chartreuse was the color of choice or minnows.

I know for a fact that Seth Vanover has been limiting out using Thermocline Lures Copper Mine color. I do not know which body or size, but if you message Tboxfish here on the forum I'm positive that he can help you! Hope this helps and that you catch a limit!

Perfect smile

Thanks for all the advice. Growing up I used to fish with my grand dad and he would never fish deeper than 8 feet with a cane pole so I knew I needed to change that up a bit. Some days we would be on them and limit and other days we never got a bite, but it was just great being out with him.

Just want to get the kids hooked on it. We live in Colorado now, but there are a few lakes here that have crappie if you know where to look for them. Nothing like Texas tho smile

I caught them pretty good last weekend up there, all in 15-18' on brush. I was using a chartreuse and white jig, but they would not touch it unless I tipped it with a minnow. I usually only use minnows, but have been trying to get into jig fishing, so it may just be my technique.

cool thanks Feedman. I was going to get some minnows at least for the kids since they have never done any of this kind of fishing.

Are you familiar with the lake? Running the north half of the lake and many of the coves on the south end can be very hazardous if you don't know. The water has been up which can put a lot of floating obstacles anywhere in the lake. There are marked boat lanes up north and lots of good options for trailering if you choose to do that. Good luck and stay safe!

Thanks Jason,

Honestly we have never been to the lake, but I am going to be careful. I do have some decent electronics, but I know that with the water conditions some of those big stumps can be hidden so we will be taking it pretty slow.

Fish the points, brush, and drop-offs. Last time I was there I limited out on Pink and Silver combination jigs. Be prepared to lose a few jigs in the brush. Be aware of the wind (both direction and speed). LOP can be pretty rough in windy conditions so be careful.

No problem. There are several coves you could fish all day and not come close to covering and lots of areas to get out of the wind if it blows. I have never crappie fished up there but it is one of my favorite bass lakes. If you are looking for a map to look at ahead of time and keep with you while there both AID and Martins Maps have maps of the lake. I have the Martins Map and it is well worth the $10 it cost. I would loan it to you but it would be cheaper to order one than for me to send it to you and you send it back to me.

Thanks for the offer.

I actually do have the AID one already and the fishing hot spot one for all 3 lakes we are trying to go to. smile I am going to be doing a lot of bass fishing while there too, but since this was the crappie forum I wasn't mentioning that part smile

I hope to hit Toledo Bend and also Fork while I am that close and see if I can get into anything there. I am going to try and do top water for bass using frogs and also some punching depending on where I am and whats around.

If you could give me some suggestions for bass fishing I wouldn't be opposed to it. I was planning on hitting Hurricane and Johnson Creek.
