Sam Rayburn is LOADED with black crappie in the .75-1.25lb range! Probably caught at least 100 fish each day. Heck, I even sent a buddy home with a 2 man limit on Friday from pre-fishing, and there were still lots of fish on that same structure the next day. Most folks I talked to were catching their fish about 10-12' deep in various depths of water. We caught most of our fish in 14-16' water suspended about 6-10' down on submerged timber and stumps. They wanted it on the fall, so we were pitching jigs out and letting them swing over the cover. The bite was very light, often just noticed the line going slack. Stumps, trees, BPs, etc., the pattern was pretty much the same. Our best 4-5 fish came off the same big stump. 1/8oz JERRRY'S JIGS in the Zorro color did well, and adding a small blade helped. Partner used some twister tail type plastics on a road runner head that did well too. No minnows during pre-fishing, but we did tip with a minnow some on tourney day to see if that picked up bigger fish. Didn't really notice any difference. Big shout out to the folks at Shirley Creek Marina! They were very hospitable folks.

I don't think it mattered what you fished with! We caught fish everywhere we went every day we fished on anything we put in the water. Size was nowhere to be found for us. I think the 1.49 was our biggest fish we caught in 4 days on the water there. As for how many we caught I couldn't tell you honestly, guessing I would say 250-300 a day! I do remember keeping up with how many I caught swimming a jig over a pile that topped out about 8' deep and I think I caught a crappie 34 casts in a row. Most were 6-8' long but had a few keepers. Friday we had a little over 9 pounds and didn't fish the stuff we planned to fish Sat so we were hopeful we could come up with 9.5 pounds anyhow but it wasn't to be. Drove to weight in fully expecting to win the lowball award. Not that Lane's baits aren't something to get excited about; but 2nd place, a check, and only giving one point back to Paul and George was much sweeter! One of my favorite things about CAT! Rayburn has been on my list of lakes to fish for years and I finally got down there! It was a fun lake! Little man got sick Friday and momma had to come get him so he's upset he missed out on the tourney and staying in the cabin so I guess we're just gonna hafta head back down there sometime this summer and stick some more fish! There's brushpile's all over that lake. Ray Charles could find brush in Rayburn. Heck half of its still green and sticking out of the water or right under the surface! Slew

Was not in the tournament but we experienced the same type of bite. We fished the South End and the best bites were when we cast out and the jig and minnow was falling back to the boat. Several 14" fish and one went almost 17" inches. Storm chased us off the water for about an hour but the bite picked up when we got back out. Sam Rayburn is fishing great right now.
