Good morning,
Since I've re-piped the 2nd floor in my house from galvanized to PEX, I now have to work on the ceiling in my son's bathroom (where the original water leak was discovered). I already torn down the ceiling and replaced with new drywall ceiling. Mud has been put in too and should be fully dried by tonight for sanding.

Now comes the Ceiling Texture part, and I have some questions as I've never done it before.

The ceiling is 40 square feet in size and I'm trying to be as cost-effective as possible. The repiping and drywall costed me a few hundred, and things are still very slow at work.

- Should I go with the Roll-On kind or Spray Can kind?

- Whether I go with Roll-On or Spray Can, do I have to paint the ceiling? even though it's going to be painted white?

Get a good quality, high solids primer (not sealer), and roll it on until the ceilng is white. You should not see the joints through the primer coat. This equals out the porosity between the drywall paper and the joint compound.

Texture is tricky for novice applicators. Spraying texture requires proper equipment, such as a controllable air source, properly mixed texture product and mess containment. If the ceiling looks good after priming, you might consider leaving it slick finish. If you are trying to blend into existing texture it is very difficult.

Another option is to try different hand applied texture finishes using slightly thinned joint compound (dont over thin or you will dilute the binder). There are a myriad of finishes you can get by using paint brushes, paint rollers, rolled up news paper, etc.

Good luck

Hire someone to come and shoot the texture on the ceiling. It won't cost much.

That seems to be the style now days. At least that's what my wife and her realtor aunt think.

missed this one.

fyi, if you have to do it again for some reason you can buy a bucket (3 gal for your size) of drywall mud, inexpensive paint paddle to stir with (drill motor and this to stir), and find an empty 5 gal bucket.

put about 2 pints of water in the 5 gal, add the 3 gal. of mud, stir with drill and paddle (non battery 1/2" works best), get the mud to the consistency of very thick pancake batter.

use a thick nap paint roller (rough surface type, 3/4 or 1" nap) and roll it on VERY SLOWLY or you will be covered in it on a ceiling job.

you want ridges in it and med to heavy coat, let dry at least 12 hrs, hit with a sheetrock sanding pad on handle to just knock down the ridges to your liking.

paint.

the sanding is super fast and easy, you are just evening up the texture. comes out looking sorta like a stucco

Here yall go.
I did it the way Hopalong mentioned. I like it.

Feel free to praise or condemn it.
I'm just happy my boy got his bathroom back. That blue paint was his idea. I should've gotten 'Matte' instead of 'Eggshell'.

Yes, I'm aware of the drywall ceiling tape that came undone....

If you want to apply a heavy texture, use light pressure.

Small broom trimed. dip into joint compound and stomp the ceiling. Wana design try waves or twirls. A wisk broom works well.
