My motor is temporarily out of commission so I was thinking about heading to Lake Raven since it is small enough to troll around. I did a quick search on here and apparently the lake has gone downhill since TPWD started spraying the vegetation. I have only fished from the bank one time and it looked like a fun little lake but I wanted to know if it is worth making the drive out there? If not, can anyone recommend a small lake that is within an hour-ish drive of Spring/Woodlands? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I'm down in Houston about once every month or 6 weeks, need to have a spot to fish so I, too, have been looking for some spots.

On the way back from Houston going home (north) about 3 weeks ago, I pulled off 45 to go in and take a look at Raven and I was really impressed with how nice it looked, both the general camping areas and the water. This might be one of the sorts of lakes that would make for a great trip in a kayak or a canoe even without any expectations of catching a lot of fish. From what I saw of it, I wouldn't be very interested in fishing it from the bank.

So, just the other day, a Houston-based kayaker published a video of him going out with two buddies and they caught 9 fish between the three of them. Not sure how long it took . . . but I could tell they had a ton of fun.

If you are out for great scenery and a fishing challenge, I think Lake Raven would be worth a trip.

I'm going to take a look at Jim's recommendations: Lake Woodlands and Sheldon.

Other than the coast itself with its myriad fishing opportunities, ya'll down in the Houston area just don't seem to have the range of freshwater lakes we do up farther north. I am withing 1 hour's drive of about 15 lakes. They are just all over east Texas.

I'm thinking I will probably go ahead and just go check it out. Or I may check out Lake Woodlands but I'd like to find a website that has the official rules on boats before I go launch there.

I recently moved here from east of Dallas and it has been hard getting used to hearing "that lake sucks" about every single lake in the area haha. I used to have Lavon and Ray Hubbard within about 20 minutes from me and a number of world-class fisheries within an hour and a half drive. Moral of the story: don't move to Houston roflmao

Raven is definitely a challenge. I used to fish it from my kayak frequently, but have started going elsewhere because the fishing is just so difficult. Can't complain at all about the scenery though...it's absolutely beautiful. Only thing I've found that will catch fish each time is weightless senkos around laydowns...but the laydowns are few and far between, you won't catch a ton of fish, and most will be small.

You ever been out to Gibbons Creek or Somerville? I lived in CS for about a year and a half while getting my master's but never made it out to either of them. Have heard some good things though.

I go to Gibbons all the time! It's not GREAT, but I can always pull a few out of there. Somerville is fun but I tend to stay away since I'm in a kayak...the waves can really get rolling on that lake and make it unenjoyable. Seems to be that way every time I go there.

Awesome well I may have to go check out Gibbons. If you ever see a guy in an old Bass Tracker with a terrible camo paint job come say hi lol. Thanks for the advice!

Gibbons is a great lake. You just have to learn how to fish it properly. Since they sprayed all the veg it has been a bit tougher the last 1.5 yrs but look for the natural structure and you will find them.

I live out in the Woodlands there's some great bank ponds and last weekend I caught four LMBs from lake woodlands. I'm on my phone and tried posting pics but they won't upload correctly. Yeah fishing is rough in that area, but I can catch something in most places there. I've been fishing lake grapevine the last few days((rough weather) with very little success. Lake grapevine because I'm in argyle working this storm with our sister company up here.

Lake raven is a nice lake and has some hogs in it. It's not like it was 5 or 6 years ago but I wouldn't rule it out by no means. It can be tuff at times but that's any lake. You should go try it out.
