I recently replaced my old carb engine with a rebuilt 200 mercury efi. The engine during start up smokes a lot and seems to use a lot of merc oil. Any ideas what would cause this and the fix. Thanks Ken

There is a thread on this at BBC. It might be a check valve on reserve oil tank. Cheap fix. Mine does it also. Once I put the Spurs to her it goes away for the rest of the day. Next day we start all over. Good luck JD

I have seen the oil rod connected upside down on more than one Merc. Mark on the pump connection should line up with a mark on the oil pump body at idle.

Thanks, good answers with excellent possibilities. I will have a mechanic look at these suggestions.

Thanks for the info, how do you check to see if this is the problem?

How big a job is this to do this check. I discussed your answer over the phone with the mechanic that installed the oil pump and thought it was right but usually not the problem. However it is a problem for me so I need to have it checked. The other suggestion was to look at the check valve. Thanks again. ken

The oil pump connection to the throttle is easy to check, just see if the 2 marks are lined up. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/mercuryOilInjection.html
