Hit the flats again today with Nate Lawrence ( treebasscatcher). We caught two apiece in the boat and missed a few more. This makes number three and four carp Nate has boated. He is starting to get the hang of this. The carp seemed even more spooky than usual today but we still managed to put the sneak on a few.

Carp on the fly, very impressive and nice job! What fly did you use?

You guys are getting a little loose with the word "master" but thank you. I appreciate the replies. The fly is one I tie. It's basically a small wooly bugger tied on a size six stainless hook. I use olive marabou for the tail and fine red chenille with a brown saddle hackle for the body. I've had people tell me it won't work because it's not weighted but I've caught carp - as well as drum, buffalo, gar, sand bass, catfish and black bass, all on the flats on this fly.

So when fishing for carp it the object to get them to hit it mid column or is the non weighted primarily not to spook them and then just wait for it to sink to the bottom before you retrieve?

Great information on the type of fly. I've had good luck with unweighted woolly buggers in rust and black. I'll try that color pattern.

The carp and buffalo are up in the shallows on Lake Somerville every morning eating shad eggs. The water isn't near as clear though. Ben fished for them last week and caught one. He was standing right in the middle of them, almost jigging for them, LOL.

Another good trick I learned when they are feeding on top water vegetation or algae is to use a top water algae fly. I tie some dark green craft fur on the hook with a very small piece of foam on top. It still sinks, but very slowly.

I try to find fish that are rooting around bottom, stiring up mud plooms. If you watch these fish they will eventually raise there head up and swim out of the ploom. If you can drop the fly right in front of them ( maybe six inches or so) and let the fly just flutter down in front of them, I believe that's your best chance at getting a strike. When they swim out of the mud ploom they are looking for something to eat, something they have stirred up of the bottom. With an unweighted fly you can quietly place the fly right in that sweet spot and keep it there by simply taking up the slack in the leader. Doing this, you will see most of the fish actually suck the fly in, there is no guessing game of wether or not they have taken like as with fishing on the bottom. I like the color of the fly I tie, not because I think it's a "hot color" but because I can see it in the water. I like to be able to see the fish and the fly at all times so I can tell what's happening - where the fly is in relationship to the fish and how the fish is reacting to it. But, that's just how I do it.
