Anytime they're feeding on shad has worked for me. I use the Bucktail jig designed by the foreign FLW guy.

I've done best with the Preacher jig when mixing it in to the deep water arsenal. A deep crank, flutter spoon, Preacher Jig, and Swim bait alternated can keep a deep school fired up much better than just chunking one of those baits. The best way I've found to fish the Preacher jig is to sling it out there, let it hit bottom. Hold the rod at 10 o'clock and give the reel handle 3 turns then stop and let it fallback to the bottom. 3 more turns then stop and let it fall back to the bottom, and repeat all the way to the boat. This newer model Talon is making comes in heavier weights with more beefed up hooks than most traditional versions.. its called the Teds Magnum Preacher Jig. Its been an awesome addition and really shines when the school gets a little finicky.

"Back in the day," hair jigs (bucktail, natural or dyed) were all we had. We used to fish them with a pork eel trailer (I still do), bouncing them up off the bottom and letting them drop back, over submerged limbs and letting them drop, etc. I never used them as a swim jig, but I can't see why it wouldn't work. I'd use a shorter trailer to do that. I'd be surprised if Donald Harper didn't use them, too - especially on Amistad and Falcon.
