Got out mid morning on some local estuary Saturday into near perfect conditions, comfort and casting wise. I found some bait being pushed by predators. First cast of a weighted shrimp fly into the zone nets a 16" speck. Caught a few more of those then I make the mistake of casting to a large black drum in shallow water 40' away. That fish towed me around for, IDK, 30 minutes. The fight, if you can call it that, never got beyond my initial cast and most of the time I had just leader out. I did get drug up and down a large deep drain. My 8/9 G. Loomis Short Stix had just enough lifting power and that along with the Commander kayak finally wore the fish (and me)out.

Nothing glamarous in a big drum, but they can sure pull their weight. Nice catch on the fly.

Biggest fish I've gotten on the fly. When I put it back into the water to revive after netting, I used my boga grip to help lift it out of the kayak and be able to hold on to it while it revived. It easily bottomed out my 30# boga scale. But fish that dart, jump, change directions, head thrash, run, head shake, flip are more fun to catch. I like a long battle with a big red because there is usually several big moments of drama and danger. Bluegill are fun as they dart around and fight like little champs. Speckled trout tail walk and head thrash. LMB jump. Even flounder provide crazy skills and thrills avoiding the net. Even little drum are fun.

Glad I got to get a big drum on the fly, probably will leave them alone next time I see one. Too much work and time spent trying to get it in with not much going on.
