So we all saw the college kids get ejected from the boat... Sat afternoon, it happened to my partner and I. There is no long story, it happened in the blink of an eye. Rogue wave (from a boat that we never saw), too much air and a bow hook. We saw the rogue and the next thing we were in the water. Being that we had just finished fishing a tourney, we both had our PFD's on and his kill switch was attached. We are both extremely sore today and I had to have my leg x rayed last night at mommas insistence. It was freak deal and we feel pretty lucky that we lost a net and our sunglasses. Could have been so much worse. Moral- life jackets and kill switches. When I popped up out of the water, the boat was right beside me. A boat that was still under power and we might have had a different ending.

Glad both of y'all are okay. Definitely need to make it a habit to use both. Just like in a vehicle you wear a seatbelt, the same should be done in a boat with a life preserver and killswitch.

that brings me too a question that I was going to ask torwards the end of the year when I purchase a boat. I don't have much experience operating a bass boat, although I have. when your on plane and a boat is coming towards you do you get off plane, "get out of the boat lane" or just keep going and run over their wake? the times I have operated a boat I always slow way down either just to the point I'm about to come off plane or completely stop. I like to go fast but I'm also very cautious on the water. I know what I do is the safest but I want to know what yall do. before I purchase my boat I will be taking a boaters safety course just to learn a few things I may not already know.
Cast it, reel it, jerk it.

That is a life experience that will serve you both well going forward. And hopefully others as well.

that brings me too a question that I was going to ask torwards the end of the year when I purchase a boat. I don't have much experience operating a bass boat, although I have. when your on plane and a boat is coming towards you do you get off plane, "get out of the boat lane" or just keep going and run over their wake? Depends on the approaching boat and your current speed. At lake like Texoma you can run flat out but they do have triple-deck ocean size vessels that will put out a wake like a rolling hill for a mile away. Those will do what the OP described and you're on them before you recognize what they are. I've been airborne from those and it's an exciting moment even though I recognize them better. When there are a ton of boats out run slower. Until you "learn" your boat it is best to exercise caution but bass boats do not put out much wake when running so crossing those wakes are reasonable at speed, Striper guide boats and wakeboard boat wakes are certainly much more challenging but the massive boats on a lake are the hardest to learn to recognize and can get you out of sorts the fastest. Be careful slowing down or swerving unless you know nobody is behind/along side/coming towards you...there are no brakes on boats and the other boat may continue 100 yards even after he gets off the gas. Steering works best when you're on the gas.

I've started carrying a spare kill switch after what happened in a high school tournament a few years ago when I was a captain. Due to high wind and a boat wake a captain was throw overboard taking the kill switch with him, killing the engine. Boys were still in boat and couldn't get to him with trolling motor as wind was too high and they didn't know how to jam kill switch to crank motor. Captain was finally rescued unharmed but really cold by another boat, but if a spare switch had been handy they could have gotten to him much sooner. I've had one in my glove box ever since. Always used one but never thought about that scenario where a spare would be needed.

We were wearing full vests. I have two inflatables but we were in his boat so we used his. After this, I won't be using inflatables anymore I believe that the little bit of padding may have saved me busted rib or two.

very glad you both came out of it alright
I know I am old but since I wear an inflatable pfd, once I put it on it does not come off until I get out of the boat. I am a good swimmer, but if I hit my head on something going out or in the water there is always a chance to get knocked out.
