I'm Taking a trip there at the end of this month with a few coworkers and I'm going to drag my boat up there and hoping to put them on a few crappie. The only thing I know about the lake is it's clear and deep which is the exact opposite of what I'm used too. Any advise would be much appreciated. Thanks TFF

Hopefully I can make this short. "Broken Bow Lake" is a great highland reservoir for crappie, small mouth and walleye. The lake can be divided into two parts. The south end is more open, deep/clear water, with coves. The north end you will find more standing trees and vegetation sometimes a slight bit dingier. Make sure you have your marker buoys to drop so you don't lose your mark.
If you go on the north end, keep to your electronics on and search for submerged structure. Depending on the temperature of the lake, I would imagine they are starting to transition back to a deeper pattern. I would use more natural colors but tie a dual jig system just to make sure your utilizing a different color pattern.
You can put in on the north end on the Mountain fork River and drive into the lake, or go further south and put in deeper into the lake depending on what you prefer. Go to google earth and look at coves you might want to test. If the water is a bit cooler there (which it traditionally is) you might have luck with some shallow water spawners.
Another thing that is fun to do, If you get off the lake and go into the Park, go to the discharge and if they have the back two gates opened up (the two furthest from the fence), you can destroy the Rainbow, Brown trout, sandbass, and Walleye.
I am taking my family there for Memorial Weekend to go stay at my parents and I will probably get up there for a bit too. Being from the area and currently living in North Texas, I rarely get back up that way anymore.
Good luck, hope I helped. If you need anymore help with the area feel free to message me.

It's a good lake to fish. Walleye bite kinda dissappears in the summer, but I would be the crappie are still spawning. That's lake is DEEP and crystal clear. As far as the river goes, stay away unless you like catching 6-8" trout all the time. All the other fish got washed away with the floods. Trust me, I know, I've been fishing it for many many years.

Clear water crappie can be really tough. Most of the things and baits we do in stained water don't work as well. I fish Possum Kingdom which has over 20 feet of visibility right now. I've finally after 5 years stumbled on a strategy that seems to work.
1. Shade trumps structure. Boat docks in deep water with heavy shade are the gold standard. I nearly got a limit at PK last week in 60+ feet of water, with the crappie running 12-30 feet. Amazing to fish a school you can see.
2. A white jig with a chartreuse flash was the go to bait. I used a Giltmore Fuzz Bugg. Minnows also worked.
3. before the spawn was over I was catching crappie in 15 feet of water allowing the jig to fall on an arc. I usually caught the crappie just when the jig got hard to see.
4. In the evening the crappie at PK leave the structure and go out looking for food. at this time I switch to trolling four poles with 1/16 oz or 1/32 oz jigs at 1- 1.5 MPH. This works pretty well at PK and I can typically put a half dozen in the box after sifting through endless sandbass. ( maybe you can get some Walleye or something useful at Broken Bow)
5. I use a 6 lb test fluorocarbon leader on all poles. In super clear water it helps. You may need 10 LB test as smallmouth will likely break this small line.
Good Luck.

My best advice is ditch that braid and put on some 4lb fluoro as your main line. You'll thank me later.

The lake is wide open. Its not built like Ray Roberts or Hugo lake. You can get out and go wide open to get from spot to spot. There are some standing trees but you have to go further north and get into some coves. When I was a kid we used to run trot lines all over the place up there. There's a good spot to put in on the Mountain Fork River and it will dump you right on the top of the lake, or you can go North of Hochatown and hit a few turn ins that will put you closer to where you want to go. I can send you that stuff in a PM if you would like.

Also, there is great fishing in the park. The floods didn't effect the fish as much as some might think. We also caught walleye, and around a dozen sandbass that we didn't get pictures of. The park has a great variety of fish, and if you don't like catching the "Texas Trout" or dinks (as us locals call them), you need to know where and how to fish for them.

I've wondered about dragging my boat up there some myself! I would love to catch some broken bow slabs but I'm too busy flinging flies when I go up there!!! Trout fishing is fun but it's not gonna replace the thump!!

if you want crappie, walleye, and smallies in catchable numbers, go to the lake. It's a fluke when you get anything but a 6" trout in the river.

Wow...13 years. My family owns businesses in the park...and I'm over 30 years into it. And that's not enen counting the years of experience passed from my father and so on.
Before you come on here and cap on my home and try to discourage people from visiting the park, maybe learn how to fish first...just a thought.
If all YOU can catch is 6" trout...that's a you problem.
