Hey guys! I'm new to the forum, and fairly new to fly-fishing (been at it for a whole year this spring). Went to the Conejos last August and caught a few 12-14 inch browns and one 20 inch brown and I am hooked on fly-fishing! Mothers Day weekend I'm going to be about an hour from PK and was wanting to get into some sand bass or striper behind the dam. Any advice or reports from you experts out there?

Definitely worth going. I went on 4-29 and caught about 40 white bass in about an hour.Sizes were small, but numbers are there. Got cold and left happy.

I haven't seen any big stripers in there recently but there were quite a few small whites. Yellow wooly buggers and gummy minnows work well. If you find a brand new pair of Oakley Holbrooks in the water please let me know...ahahhaaa. Let us know how it goes.

Haha, bummer Banger, I'll keep my eyes peeled for those Oakleys, but no big promises, LOL! Thanks for the input on wooly buggers and gummy minnows. As it stands I'll prob go at least for a day and check it out. Hopefully I'll have something to share back with ya'll here in a couple weeks! I don't have to catch monsters to have fun Mateo, so I appreciate you sharing your experience too.

cheers

It's funny as all the same year class fish tend to stick together. If you start out and there all good size stay put. If they are a little small move just a bit of if fishing deeper water add shot and get under the little ones. They will hang out below being lazy picking off the wounded the little guys leave behind. Make sure and have some chartuse and white clousers in size six. Iv seen several of the surf rod guys with lot of 7-10 pound fish but as far as on the fly for striper tons of 14-18" and several 3-6 1/2 7 lb fish plenty of fish on a four weight haha. Hope to hear how you do.

Possum Kingdom. It's called that because it is overrun by opossums and any of your equipment they don't chew to shreds they will carry off to their lairs for the offspring to destroy. The surrounding woods are ankle deep with opossum turds and it smells worse than it sounds.
Ok, just kidding. The Brazos river below Lake PK can be a decent place to fish but it's hit and miss. The river flow will be very slow unless there's been recent rains.

Possum Kingdom really got it's name from the fur traders back in the 1800's. Yes there was an overabundance of possums.

Interested to hear how you do. Me and some buddies are doing the 20 mile float below the dam next weekend and would love some insight from anyone who might have any. I'd take one of those PM's FishyB, I see you slaying in those YouTube videos.

I was there a week ago. I managed on small lmb on a popper just below the dam. I walked downriver fishing all the way. I managed two more bluegills and that's it. The carp were busy tearing up the river banks but they weren't interested in anything I threw near them.

This is a fantastic trip. There's some really great water and if I were you (especially fly fishing) I would be picky about where to fish - hit the deep pools after runs, bang brushy shallows at morning/evening, throw a fly or two at any exposed branch in the middle of the river. I wouldn't waste much time fishing the long slow pools.
