A friend and I are planning our first trip to the Llano river in a few weeks. We are considering dropping in at the Highway 87 crossing and fishing the 12 miles down to Castell. Do you think this is too far for one full day? Like I said earlier this is our first time down there so any tips you are willing to let go of would be greatly appreciated.

I can tell you 12 miles and trying to fish is tough. We have done a trip that was 11 and didn't get to fish the last 4 because we had to meet our shuttle on LMF. The other trip was Whitney Dam to Dick's, which is about 10 miles and it was a fishing tournament; again, we were cruising pretty good and fishing here and there along the way. Just my $0.02

Thank you very much! I'll explore a few other options. We want to be doing more fishing that paddling.

You can camp on that stretch of Llano; might consider breaking it up into two 6 mile days! It also kind of depends when you plan on doing it, wait another month or so, you will have a lot of day light.

12 miles is way to far to fish and paddle in one day. I'd look for something in the 4-6 mile range if you want to fish it effectively.

Thats a long stretch with some long portages. 102 to llano proper can be fun.

Is there a place to drop in between highway 87 and castell that would still allow 4 to 6 miles?

Just looked at Google earth. There is a 6.2 mile section between crossing upstream from Hwy 87 starting in Mason.

Well we decided to do the 12 mile trip in one day. We launched at 8 am and got out at 8 pm. There was definitely more paddling than fishing but that was ok. The fish were biting and the scenery was amazing. It can be done but like others have said it makes for a long day. A burger at Castell had never tasted so good!

Those fish in there are completely gullible and big - is what I heard a few weeks ago. Snaky by now too though probably.

you folks considering a trip in that area - there is a campground just out of Castell right on the river. The folks there used to offer a canoe shuttle service. Frank Falk and his wife were owners back then, and I don't think you'll ever meet better folks. I can't find a number for them, but think it would be worth the effort if you'd want to try the river down there.

Really excited to see this. I've got a house rented on the river with a group of friends in early July. Right on that stretch where the river turns NW for about a mile.
Any tips? What are the land laws like down there - need to stay in the river bed or keep feet wet to be legal?

We had a lot of action on black woolly buggers and olive/white clouser minnows. We originally thought the bass would be in the shade under the large over hanging trees. We later found that the majority of our bass came on the sunny bank on the edge of the matted vegetation. I am unsure of the land laws but we stayed in the river the entire time to play it safe. This is a wonderful stretch of river! Also make sure everything on your kayak is strapped down. The rapids arent too bad but still very easy to flip if you get turned sideways in the middle of them. Have fun and enjoy your trip!

Awesome! should we be able to walk that mile of it where we're staying? I wasn't planning to bring a kayak, but I can.

I am unsure of the land laws but we stayed in the river the entire time to play it safe. The Llano is a navigable river, so you have the right to access a reasonable amount of bank to make use of the river. Of course knowing the law doesn't mean much if an ornery landowner confronts you, so it's best to play it safe as you wisely did.
