I currently drive a 2002 ford f250 with the 7.3 powerstroke with 120,800 miles. I have always wanted a cummins because I like how easy the motors are to work on and the dodges look good to me. What's y'alls opinions on trading my truck for a cummins 5.9 12 valve or 24 valve?

Have always preferred the inline motor design. Fewer parts easier to work on, more room under hood, and its my opinion they were easier on fuel.

I would want to go to a new a model 5.9 as I could get which would be a 24 valve, but both the 12 and 24's are solid reliable motors.

Got a buddy with a 7.3 that has 515,000 on it - and he just pulled a trailer to and from New Mexico with it.
Widely considered the best diesel Ford ever built.

I'd think twice or three times.

Having driven a few 5.9 12 & 24 valves, and currently being in a 6.7, I'd stick with the 7.3. That's a heck of an engine and the body you have will out last any of the 3rd gen Dodge bodies

^^^this^^^ No way I would trade that set up for a Dodge that's going to give you suspension and interior issues out the wazoo.

Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

My boss has a 2003 F250 7.3 powerstroke. Truck has been babied, waxed ever month washed every week. Never had a trailer hooked to it. Currently has 320k miles on it. At about 280k he spent several thousand dollars having the injector cups replaced and having the heads rebuilt. Sure they are good, but they also have issues, he has had more oil leak over the years than Carter has pills.

I would rather have a high mileage 5.9 than a 7.3, but that's just me. On the other hand id rather have a known beast than dive into someone else's problems... which are common with used diesels due to neglect of preventative maintenance and tuning/abuse.

A little over 300k. Not knocking it by any means, but its not like you buy a dodge and rebuild the front end every 50K miles and a ford is good forever.
