Decided to reserve a spot on a 36 hour trip out of Galveston party boats at the end of May. Limited load of 30 passengers, so it oughta be pretty comfortable.

It's been quite awhile since I had fresh yellowfin tuna on the grill!

they have been catching quite a few! I see a lot of times they say they would have landed a LOT more but the anglers were not knowledgeable in how to fight those mean ol tuna! After our house finishes this Summer, I hope to make a trip down there and jump on this boat for the same trip. good luck!

Envious. I have the urge to go. The next trip I have planned is in October.

Good luck Zeek. Looks like they are doing well lately.

Most of the head boats will have hooks and weights... I would take some jigs to, just in case! And good luck, grilled tuna is hard to beat.

Wellllll ... Galveston Party Boats has always been a bit odd in my experience. On past trips, when I brought my own rod & reel, they refused to let me use boat leaders and sinkers. When I asked about this trip, they said they'll have regular weights available, but they're only 12-24 ounces. If I'm gonna drop 800 to 1,000 feet (or more!), I want 3 to 4 pounds of lead to reach the bottom and stay there.

As far as jigs and casting lures, yeah, I have my own already.

Actually, no, I didn't. Thank you. Gonna order a couple of the 130's on Ebay and get some Owner inline single hooks to replace the trebles.

I've led a charmed life with treble hooks so far - have yet to get one embedded in me. But have seen some unfortunate deckhands who were not so lucky, so I'll try to make life easier on them.

I wouldn't worry to much about fishing 800-1000ft. It takes a very special set of circumstances for them to be able to fish that deep. But if you must, and have some torpedo sinkers, just hook several together with split rings. BTW, I always take my own gear and have never had a problem using their leaders and weights, but as you say they basically use 12 ounce bank sinkers.

Well, the guy I spoke with at the landing (I think his name is Brock) said that they'll do some deeper fishing for grouper, tilefish etc from 600 to almost 1,000 feet if possible.

*edit* just found out that they only have 14 people booked for this trip. Anyone in DFW want to go with me?

In my experience, at every company I have worked for, the people answering the phones (especially this time of year when all the new hires are in) usually don't really know what goes on on the boats. They have a cheat sheet for common questions, and play it safe with answers after that. Matt runs awesome trips and am sure he will help with any equipment, within reason, to make your trip more successful. If you are still worried, but a stick of 1" rebar fro. A steel yard and cut a couple 12 and 18 inch sections off of it... cheapest way to go.
