What kind of scissors and where can I get some should I use to clean gar? Plan on starting to keep some to help out the freezer.
Eric.

Hatchet, fillet knife and leather gloves ,chop head off, grab top fin and chop towards front peeling a small strip off. Then peel skin off with filet knife. Don't take gloves off until armor is totally removed. After that cut into knuckle steaks. I haven't done it,but seen it done. I prefer catfish,or crappie.

Guess it kinda does the same thing as the scissor technique. Dont have a holding block though so still kinda stuck.

A pair of yellow handled tin snips (straight cut)work pretty good at getting to the meat. Peel the hide back & cut off the meat. Gloves are a definite plus too.

Don't need a holding block, you hold the fin and chop towards where the head was. Chopping action doesn't require a vice. Can easily clean off a tail gate. Bring a 4' piece of 2x12" for a chopping board if truck isn't paid off. Don't make it complicated. don't keep trophy class fish, you'd be surprised how old they are. Real coarse meat.

Solid. Yea not planning on getting butt loads of big gar by bow fishing or anything like that... Just want to keep some that I catch on cut bait in summer and fall to keep my freezer from running out. Mostly medium size longnose.

Make H shaped cut, start behind head, go to tail. Use hacksaw to start cut. Cut down back with knife between scales or tap a hatchet with a hammer. Remove meet from skins with knife. No bones, and pretty wHite meet.

Ok ! If you use a hammer and hatchet got down back. Then cut 3rd line of scales from back to front in between scales pull away from back like skinning a deer or pig super easy. After you open it up cut out back straps just like a deer .. will be no bones in it cut off all black and red colors!! Should leave all white meat with no bones Then cut your steaks 3/8 thick we use an egg wash and 1 whole box of saltines to one cup of flour fry till golden drown good luck !!

Swing by lowes, pick up a couple of the guys standing outside, pay them a few bucks to do it, then cook the fish.

I have never cleaned one but I didn't realize their skin was that tough.
